My friend was eager to recommend her new favorite dining experience at a newly renovated resort close to Playa del Carmen, so we followed her lead and reserved our spot for the special Chef's Table Dining Experience at The Tides Riviera Maya. Six years ago, the first time we visited the Merida Zoo, the kids were not much more than babies. We were in the city doing some exploring and celebrating Cole's 2nd birthday so a trip to the zoo seemed like the perfect way to spend the afternoon. It turned out to be the perfect time for both little one's to spike a fever and come down with some sort of horrible virus that landed us in our hotel room for a few days. Two words: diarrhea and tights. Not a good combination especially in a public restroom at a playground. Read More...
Every once in a while, when I am really starting to be concerned that I am raising my children in a party town, a den of iniquity completely lacking in any cultural integrity, an opportunity like this pops up. Some of Mexico's finest wine producers, Santo Thomas, Monte Xanic, Casa Domecq and Casa Madero, offered tastes of more than 20 of their best wines to a crowd of over 1000. Read More...

In a nutshell, Fume Blanc is a marketing term conceived of and utilized by the late great Robert Mondavi to sell a rather fine batch of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape much maligned in the United States until the 1970′s. Despite the fact that wine lovers had been buying and loving Loire Valley Pouilly Fume for decades (made from the exact same varietal) attempts to successfully market and sell this particular grape had fallen flat. A clever play on Sauvignon Blanc and Pouilly Fume, this “new” wine, Fume Blanc, was an immediate hit in the wine world and Mr. Mondavi had a home run with his first bottling, way back in 1968! Confession: I am a cork dork. I love wine. I love drinking it, I love reading about it and (often to the dismay of my friends) I love talking about it. In a previous life, I had the great pleasure of working for a very discriminating wine importer and distributor in New York. I had the opportunity to visit vineyards, meet with wine makers and taste some of the finest wines in the world. I have been spoiled. Read More...
