Kinnon Family Trip Report 2013 - Chapultepec Zoo

Our first full day in Mexico City was sunny and warm. Warm enough for shorts and flip flops but, having learned my lesson in Monterrey and Guadalajara, I knew that more formal attire would be expected. So, despite the weather, Rob and I wore long pants and closed shoes. News in the Fight to Keep Exotics Off of 5th Avenue

Today's online edition of the Playa del Carmen newspaper La Respuesta featured an update about the fight to keep exotic animals from being exploited to the tourist trade in Playa del Carmen. CEA Needs Volunteers!

Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) has had government authorization to run a program for protection, conservation, research and management of sea turtles on four local beaches since 1993. (SEMARNAT. S.G.P.A./ D.G.V.S. 02652 07). During turtle season, CEA staff and volunteers patrol the beaches nightly to identify and protect nesting females, nests, and hatchlings. Read More...

Protest Against the Mistreatment of Animals in Playa del Carmen

I don't think there is a one of us, Playa resident and tourist alike, who has not noticed (or been approached by) the street vendors hocking photo opportunities with the animals, birds and reptiles native to the Riviera Maya. Recently, the offerings have expanded beyond parrots, iguanas and monkeys to include lion and tiger cubs, apparently sedated for the safety of the customers. While certain vendors have been detained for lack of credentials, still more come in their place with better and better documentation. Read More...

Travels in the Yucatan - Parque Centenario and the Zoo

Six years ago, the first time we visited the Merida Zoo, the kids were not much more than babies. We were in the city doing some exploring and celebrating Cole's 2nd birthday so a trip to the zoo seemed like the perfect way to spend the afternoon. It turned out to be the perfect time for both little one's to spike a fever and come down with some sort of horrible virus that landed us in our hotel room for a few days.
