When contemplating a destination for a family trip or even a quick getaway, one of our top considerations is cuisine/dining options. Read More...
One of the hazards of traveling with me is that you are always waiting. Why? Because I am always stopping to take pictures. Most of these pictures don't make it into our trip reports because they don't specifically apply to the activities we were doing or what I happen to be writing about. These may not necessarily be the best shots but sometimes they end up being the ones that really show you what a place it like...how it feels to actually be there. Read More...
Today was the first day that everyone really felt 100%. Read More...
Today was kind of a bust as Rob woke up to find his back out. Read More...
With just one day in town, already we could see that this is an area in Mexico that is truly flourishing. Read More...
It's that time of year again! Time to drag my husband kicking and screaming out of Playa del Carmen in a futile attempt to get him to wind down a bit and relax! Read More...
Our first stop was to see the archaeological site of Mont Alban. Inhabited over a period of 1,500 years by a succession of peoples...Olmecs, Zapotecs and Mixtecs..the terraces, dams, canals, pyramids and artificial mounds of Monte Albán were literally carved out of the mountain and are the symbols of a sacred topography. Not every single day can be Go! Go! Go! Sometimes, you just need to relax and take in your surroundings, let the sites and the sounds and the smells of the city waft by you and that's what we did for a day or two. Read More...
One of the sticky things we deal with every year around this time is Cole's birthday. Every year, it falls during our road trip forcing us to host the expected birthday party with all of his friends often weeks in advance of the actual birthday AND find something fun to do (kid fun, not grown-up fun) on the actual day. This year we decided to check out one of Oaxaca's most famous natural landmarks, Hierve el Agua. Read More...
One of the handcrafts we most wanted to find while we were in Oaxaca was its colorful textiles. Oaxaca is renowned for its intricately embroidered fabrics and woven rugs are we were certainly not going to return home without an armful. Read More...
Here's something else you might now know about my DH. He loves to shop. Mind you, it is possible he has never seen the inside of a grocery store and all of his clothes shopping is done online but when we go on vacation, Mr. Kinnon gets his shop ON! He is crazy for art and textiles and will spend hours and hours looking for just the right pieces to buy to bring home from our adventures. Read More...
Our first day in Oaxaca City was all about relaxation...and food! We all slept in and spent a leisurely morning at Casa Palomita (named for the bird not the movie snack) before going for a stroll into town. A working vacation for Rob, he had hours of emails to attend to and I took that time to acquaint myself with a city map and pin down some restaurants to check out. Oaxaca is known for its cuisine and the city is home to many fine Chefs. Read More...
Fortunately, the next day Rob was feeling much better and, after spending so long in the hotel alone, was ready to get on the road. We had planned to spend a day or two in Puebla but decided just to stop for a nice lunch instead and then continue on to Oaxaca City. We picked up our car at a rental place near the airport and with a little help from our iPhones and Google maps, we were on our way. Read More...
Today was the day we were scheduled to leave for Oaxaca. A car rental had been arranged in advance and the plan was to drive to Puebla, spend a day or two checking out the city and then carry on to Oaxaca where we were to spend the remainder of our vacation time. What we did not plan was for Rob to come down with a horrible stomach bug that would keep him in our hotel room and in bed in definitely! Read More...
A few years ago, our family road trip took us through San Cristobal de las Casas in the state of Chiapas. The highlight of our time there was a trip to Na Bolom, the home of Franz and Gertrude Blom, now preserved as a museum and a monument to their life together and their work in a remote region of south Chiapas, home to the Lacandon Maya. This intimate museum made a big impact on us so, of course, a visit to the home of Frida Kahlo was high on our list of "must-sees" in Mexico City. Read More...
