Recently, a poem was passed on to me by a fellow expat and colorful character who splits his time between here and Belize. Some of you know him as Barefoot Skinny. Now he did not write this poem. In fact, no one seems to know this "Rigrat" to whom the poem is credited. With permission, I am reprinting it here on "Life's a Beach". Although to me, this poem is very "Belize", the lament is all too familiar and certainly applies here in Mexico. Read More...

There is a lot of really good food in Belize. Off the top of my head, some of my most fondly remembered meals have been served up at Hannah's in San Ignacio, El Fogon in San Pedro and Miss Robina's roadside lean-to in Burrell Boom! We have tried lots of eateries on the island, with the expected mixed reviews but there is one place we return to time and time again; Estel's Dine on the Beach. Read More...
It may seem hard to believe but sometimes we just have to get away from our hectic day to day in Playa del Carmen and escape to somewhere even more laid back. For some years now, that place has been San Pedro, a gritty little Caribbean town on Ambergris Caye just off the coast of Belize. Regular "Life's a Beach" readers who have been following our adventures through Mexico and Central America over the past 4+ years will recall many rum soaked jaunts to the island and watched us collect a great group of friends along the way. Special thanks to Tacogirl.com and the SAGA Humane Society of San Pedro Belize for allowing me to reprint this article which addresses an important seasonal issue for pet owners both in San Pedro and Playa del Carmen alike. There aren’t many things that everyone in San Pedro agrees about, but no one would argue with you when you say ‘It’s hot!’. It has been very warm the past couple of months and it looks like we may be in for a long and very hot summer. While we seek out the shade and drink ice cold drinks to cool us down, we need to remember that our furry friends feel the heat just like we do. The only difference is that they depend on us to provide them with shade and fresh, cool water. Read More...
This week I learned that the ambitious Direct Abundance San Mateo Sanitation Project planned for the school had ground to a halt. The letter below from Founder and Board Member Heather Zwicker details the foundation's immediate need for a specialist in wastewater garden systems. Laurie and I are hoping that within our significant network, we can set "six degrees of separation" into high gear and find someone to assist with this exciting project. Read More...
Despite our early to bed times on Saturday night, Sunday morning was not all smooth sailing. Cindy confirmed that the tandem jumpers would indeed be able to go today. Good news. Mitch appeared with the news that Jill had given herself a touch of sun-poisoning Read More...
A few weekends ago, the Kinnon clan decided last minute to take an impromptu trip to San Pedro, Belize. The impetus for this trip was the Boogie in Belize , an annual gathering of skydivers from all over the world who take to the sky over Ambergris Caye Read More...
Our departure day was an uncharacteristically busy one for me. Laurie had arranged a fabulous breakfast at Changes in Latitude with 50% of the proceeds going to support Holy Cross School. The Direct Abundance girls were there too, on the way to the airport, Read More...
The day following lobsterfest was another dreary windy day. Tacogirl had a whole list of fun events planned for the day, some of which were contingent on the weather. At this point, the parasailing trip and the Seaduced Sunset Cruise were both in jeopardy. Read More...
Not surprisingly, our first full day on the island was a lazy one. The kids were sent off on a fishing excursion and the grownups recovered from the night before. Breakfast and Bloody Mary's at Estel's , our favorite place in San Pedro, brought Read More...

After thinking long and hard about poverty, the subject of Blog Action Day 2008 , I find myself with more questions than answers. First and foremost is "What IS poverty?" and secondly "Who makes that determination?” Can we categorize Read More...

I absolutely love surprises. I like being surprised and even better, I like surprising friends. About a month ago, when our dear friend Cindy popped off an email to me and casually invited us to the island to share her birthday with her, I politely declined. Read More...
