You read all the hype about the Mayan calendar, the end of days, the impending apocalypse... right? Well, so did we and watched with much amusement as everyone outside of the Mayan world made their preparations. On Friday December 14, 2012 BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors and FurnitureMEX hosted a Holiday Zumbathon in Playa del Carmen to support the efforts of Christmas Dreams Playa. The event was organized by Mary Martinez and lead by certified Zumba instructors from around the globe. Coco's Cat Rescue is a non-profit organization started by Laura Raikes in March of 2009. Since Laura was a young girl she was helping her dad in farming and started rescuing all kinds of animals from bats to dogs, cats and even bottle feeding goats and lambs. One of the rescued cats was Igor who had only one eye after an attack by a crow. He is still a much loved family pet back home in Wales. Read More...
For the past few years, a caring group of Playa del Carmen residents and frequent flyers banded together to help spread a bit of Christmas joy to the less fortunate children of our region. In December 2011 this program, now known as "Christmas Dreams Playa" was able to provide gifts for over 200 children who might otherwise receive no present at all for the holidays. Read More...

Have you ever wondered what life is like in a Maya village today? What would it look like? How would the local people really dress, eat, work, pray and go about their daily lives? Are you interested in a cultural experience more meaningful than a quick stop for souvenirs orchestrated by a big bus tours on your way home from the ruins. I'm taking about a full day spent in a remote village talking with the local residents, meeting with village elders, learning about the proud history of the Maya in Quintana Roo.
