We have been to Merida several times in the six years that we have lived in Mexico. One of Cole's annual Tae Kwon Do tournaments is hosted here and we are looking forward Birdie's first qualifying horse show that will take place at the Hipico del Sureste at the end of March. It's a great city and I am enjoying it now more than ever. We are here on a recon mission, looking for investment properties for ourselves and for buyers looking to expand their portfolios, so it's not as much of vacation as I might like. Isla Animals is a non-profit organization founded by Isla Mujeres resident Alison Sawyer Current continuing a project started by Amigos de los Animales in 2002. Isla Animals is dedicated to decreasing the unwanted pet population on Isla Mujeres, Mexico through on-going spay/neuter programs, education, vaccinations and adoption. Initially Alison and her husband Jeff opened their beautiful home on North Beach and agreed to foster litters of puppies until they were old enough to put up for adoption. The Equine Therapy Center in Playa del Carmen AC was created in March 2008 to address the concerns of local parents with children with disabilities. Supported by the owners of the Equestrian Clubs of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras, this therapy program was launched to provide alternative therapies to people with disabilities living on the Riviera Maya. The Equine Therapy Center of Playa del Carmen works with children and adults with many different types of disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism, motor coordination impairment, down syndrome and hydrocephalus. Malix Pek Playa del Carmen Malix Pek A.C., started in 2008, is a registered non-profit (Asociación Civil) comprised of a group of Volunteers dedicated to the rescue and adoption of abandoned and mistreated dogs. Malix is Maya for dog of no origin or colloquially, "street dog", and describes the dogs that this organization was formed to assist. Coco's Cat Rescue provides free or low cost spay/neuter surgeries and basic pet care to those on a low income. While the primary focus is cats, Coco's clinic also provides spay/neuter services for dogs through grants from Sociedad Protección Animales de Peninsula (SPAP) and Veterinarios Internacionales Dedicados a Animales Sanos (VIDAS). CCR is also committed to education which encourages responsible pet ownership and challenges negative associations with feral cats and consequent cruelty. Every once in a while, when I am really starting to be concerned that I am raising my children in a party town, a den of iniquity completely lacking in any cultural integrity, an opportunity like this pops up. A few weeks back, just before Taste of Playa, we were invited to attend a special event at Xcaret, a wine tasting evening organized to kick off the 1st annual Festival of Mexican Wines scheduled for March 9-12 2011.
