Affordable Produce in Playa del Carmen
Since our last trip to The United States, a fabulous family Thankgiving and 60th birthday celebration for my MIL in Miami, I am even more appreciative of the affordability of our food staples and produce. Yesterday was Wednesday, the day where all the stores have fruits and veggies marked down even lower than usual. I know "Life's a Beach" readers have an understandable fascination with daily life in Mexico so, here is yesterday's haul from Mega and the associated costs below.

cebolla blanca (white onion)...........1.7 kilos..........................$24.51
zanahoria cambria (baby carrots) .57 kilos..........................$4.72
coliflor (cauliflower)........................1 large head....................$13.40
platano (bananas)..........................1.75 kilos........................$7.90
pepino (cucumbers)........................1.51 kilos........................$9.36
limones (limes)................................0.59 kilos........................$2.68
manzanas (apples)..........................1.3 kilos.........................$25.87
zanahoria (carrots).........................1 kilo..............................$5.87
berro (watercress).........................2 bunches.......................$9.00
granada (pomagranite)...................0.75 kilos........................$17.29
jitomate enslada (plum tomatoes)...0.70 kilos........................$12.39
ejote verde (green beans)...............0.40 kilos........................$6.98
camote amarillo (sweet potatoes)...1.14 kilos........................$22.12

Total $162.09 pesos
At today's rate, that comes to about $12.00 usd. While there are many things that are way overpriced in Mexico, (namely anything with a motor or an electrical cord) at least putting good, fresh food on the table remains an affordable luxury.
**PS. The beautiful blown glass hurricanes on the table I picked up at Walmart for about $4.00 usd a piece. Sweet!
