July 29, 2012 Bird Watching Festival
Sunday, July 29th, 2012 there will be a bird watching festival to celebrate the Mayan New Year. Participants should arrive at 6am to the Ruinas de Parque Sihunchen located at Km 3 on the Hununcmá- San Antonio Chel highway, about 15 km outside of Merida.
The park, Ruinas de Parque Sihunchen specializes in birdwatching and the protection of the natural environment for various species of birds. The park also houses the archeological ruins of the ancient city of Sihunchen. Birdwatching tours and archeological astronomy focusing on the mythology of the Greek and Mayan night skies are offered and conveniently, there is a bed and breakfast on site.
To arrive by car from Merida, take the Perferico Poniente to avenida Canek, you will pass the exit for Caucel, stay on the highway and you will be on the new highway Celestun Siasal, exit at kilometer 12, you will see a sign that says, "la granja de los niños", follow the dirt road about 1 kilometer until you see Hacienda de San Antonio Chel just past the Hacienda are the Ruinas Parque Sihunchen.
To arrive by bus from Merida, take a bus to Hunucmá and take a motorcycle taxi to the park.

Make sure to bring a snack, water, your camera and dress comfortably. If you forget your binoculars, you can rent a pair for $50 pesos at the park.
