Girls' Night Out in Playa del Carmen

“Over the ocean and through immigration to Grandmother’s house we go…”

That’s right, the kids are off to visit Grandma in the States, their first trip flying solo. They are excited. We are excited. They will spend a week in Boston eating lobster and seeing the sites then, spend a week on the beach in Rhode Island with Uncle Mike, Dave and the girls. This is a very big adventure for our little ones.

As we will be child-free for two whole weeks, Rob and I decided to have a special kids’ night, each of us taking one child for a night of fun. Birdie and I love our “Girls’ Night Out” time and have been looking forward to an evening out on the town. So what does one do with an eight year old girl going on eighteen? Sushi and shopping of course!

I have to say, it's been awhile since I strolled the length of 5th Avenue and so much has changed. Lots of new restaurants and shops. I barely recognized it as the unpaved street it was when we first arrived 6 years ago. It's all so glamorous now!

Another fun night with my daughter prowling the streets of Playa. It's nice that even at the tender age of 8, she seems to enjoy and appreciate the excitement of it all. It's so easy to take for granted having lived here for 6 years but Playa del Carmen really is fabulous. I should try to capture some of my daughter's enthusiasm and remind myself to go out and explore the town more often.

Girls' Night Out

Sometimes, the best nights out with the girls DON"T actually involve shooters, dancing on bars and losing you clothes at the beach!

Wait, actually NONE of my nights out have EVER involved ANY of those things (not that I can remember, anyway). But, even if they did, it would be nice to dial it down every once and again to spend a night out on the town with my very best girl, Birdie. And, that's just what we did last night. Rob and Connor spent the evening at Bad Boys, (which by the way, was packed to the gills last night) Cole was off at a sleepover, so Birdie and I were left to fend for ourselves. After stopping in briefly to say "hello" to Captain Dave and Kim and J.J., we hit the town, just us girls. My first thought was to check out Fusion for a nice dinner on the beach and some music, but Birdie had other ideas. She wanted to dine "in town", and so we headed up to La Quinta to see what we could find.

After a nice stroll up 5th, we wandered into El Jardin de Mariela, a cozy enclave of art galleries, boutiques and small restaurants.

The popular Casa Mediterranea is right next door, but Birdie and I settled in at the other little Italian place, the name of which I have never known.

We toasted our fun evening, Fanta for Birdie, a cold Chilean sauvignon blanc for me.

After dinner, we shopped for handmade jewelry.

We appreciated art.

And, we headed out for some good helado Michaocan at a new locale on Calle 6.

We pondered the variety of fresh, handmade fruit pops.

The smooth and rich ice cream that the region of Michoacan is famous for.

One Oreo Cookie cone for Birdie and a cup of Caramel ice cream for me. Diet be damned!

Doesn't that face just say it all?

It's still up for debate whether she will make it to school this morning, but I guess an occassional absense is a small price to pay for good girl time together.
