Explayarte's "Les Miserables" Packs the House at Xcaret!

Last week, Playa del Carmen's Music and Performing Arts School, Explayarte presented its full scale production of the award winning musical, Les Miserables. The show ran for three nights to packed and overwhelmingly enthusiastic audiences in Xcaret's Foro Abierto. This is the 5th Explayarte production that I have seen, my 4th as a corporate sponsor and the 3rd that Cat has participated in. I think it's fair to say that I am no longer what anyone would consider objective about these shows and the production company! Anyone who has been anywhere within earshot of me for the past few weeks has heard me wax effusive about the school, the leadership, the teachers, the curriculum, the production process and the level of talent that Explayarte demonstrates and shares not only with our children but with everyone who makes the effort to come out and support these shows.

For years, I have heard people lament that there is no culture in Playa del Carmen. No museums, no dedicated performance spaces, art galleries, few opportunities to expose our children to the arts in a meaningful way. I'm pretty sure that not a single person who attended any of these performances can deny that we are blessed to have music theatre of this caliber to enjoy and even take part in! As I looked back into the audience each night, I was really pleased to see so many families and even better groups of teens and almost teens who had come to see the show together. Certainly the timing of the production, falling after the overwhelming success of the star studded major motion picture, must have had an affect on attendance. Above that however, in the weeks and days leading up to the show, the energy and excitement surrounding the final rehearsals and the performers was absolutely palpable. It had to be infectious as nearly everywhere I went I could overhear people talking about the show....what night they were going....who they knew in the show....would be like the movie. It was this infectious excitement and anticipation that packed the house each night and had the audience leaping to their feet and cheering

About Your Instructors - Suzanne and Shawn Bandick

In 2001 on a quest for adventure and a change of culture we packed up our two kids, and moved from Vernon, B.C. to Mexico. Our children, now young adults and in search of their own adventure and careers have moved back to Kelowna but we keep a home base in Puerto Aventuras on the Caribbean coast of Mexico just south of Cancun.

In Canada, we built and trained sales and marketing teams for companies. We traveled extensively for business and with our children for pleasure. Then came the question, why do we work so hard just so we can go travel? Why don't we just go and live abroad? Two years later we were liquidated down to what would fit in our Toyota 4 runner and headed south. Once in Mexico, Shawn opened a real estate office which was another fun adventure making tons of new friends and helping them live their dreams. Suzanne became a writer and a life coach.

KKiS Needs Volunteer Readers! Can You Help?

For the past couple of weeks, KKiS (Keeping Kids in School) has fallen way short of the number of folks they need to help teach English to first, second and third graders at Pelopides School. Yesterday they had only eight people, roughly half of what's needed.

Would you please consider volunteering to help them out? It's only an hour, on Wednesday afternoons, and it's a fun an rewarding experience. The kids eagerly look forward to it, and it's a shame to see them disappointed.

Playa del Carmen's premier performance arts school is looking for performers for it's upcoming production. Following the success of Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, CATS, Seussical the Musical and most recently All Shook Up, Explayarte is pleased to announce its next production, the long running classic, Les Miserables.

Do you love musical theatre? Do you love Elvis Presley? Then Explayarte invites YOU to enjoy their upcoming production, All Shook Up!

All Shook Up is a musical comedy built around a selection of songs made famous by Elvis Presley. The story, based on William Shakespeare's 1602 play Twelfth Night, is set in 1955, in "any-town" middle America, where a young girl's dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help the small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. Among the 24 songs featured in the score are the beloved classics "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," "Don't Be Cruel," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and of course "All Shook Up".

This exciting production, directed by Shane Southcott, will feature nearly 70 young local dancers, singers and musicians. If you have had the good fortune to see Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, Cats or Seussical, you know what kind of powerhouse production to expect from Explayarte and their amazingly talented team of directors, musicians, choreographers, designers and performers. If you have enjoyed any of these productions, you won't want to miss All Shook Up!

The score will be performed LIVE by Explayarte's orchestra. The script has been translated into Spanish for this production, the first showing of All Shook Up to be performed in Mexico. Sports and Extracurricular Activities for Children in Playa del Carmen

Whether you are here on the Riviera Maya for one month, one year or more, keeping your children active and engaged can be a challenge. Children are not always content to hang out on the beach everyday. When we moved here, the options for children's activities were extremely limited. As the city has grown, the demand for quality children's programs has increased and the options expanded to meet the growing need. As you may have already discovered, finding the right resources can be a challenge! You can only imagine the obstacles we faced eight years ago with no Facebook, no online directories or phone books and nothing more than word of mouth from teachers and other parents to draw from.

Many families, moving to Playa del Carmen with older children, come hoping to continue the activities that the kids were involved with in their home country. If your children play soccer you will find this task much easier than if they play lacrosse. Almost all the private schools have a soccer team but not necessarily a team for all ages. Very often, families will need to look outside of the school campus for extracurricular opportunities to meet their family's needs.

Last summer, in an effort to help local parents, we published an article with a list of Playa del Carmen summer camps and "cursos de verano" for kids in the area. More recently, our good friend Sara Moen at Playa Maya News compiled a great list of resources for families and children who are visiting the Riviera Maya, either on vacation or for an extended stay. Working together with Sara to find the very best and most popular activities started me on the path to uncovering what options are available for children who are living here full-time and need well-structured sports and other extra-curricular programs during the academic school year. When we started really looking around, we discovered many more activities than I had anticipated.

This is by no means a complete list. It is a work in progress. This information was compiled using my own personal experience and the experiences of friends and other families living in Playa del Carmen.

Soccer - One of the greatest things about sports is that the spirit of competition and fair play is universal. No matter what country you are from or what language you speak, on the sports field it all comes down to skill, stamina and experience. Signing your kids up for sports in Playa del Carmen will go along way to helping them make friends and learn Spanish. Soccer, or futbol, is by far the most popular sport and nearly all the private schools have their own teams. Girls are allowed to play on these teams but with the exception of the older girls team at Instituto Tepeyac, you will find very few girls on the "cancha" come game day. If your chosen school does not have a futbol team for your aspiring Lionel Messi or Mia Hamm, there are league teams to consider for boys and girls of all ages.

American Football is becoming more and more popular in Quintana Roo. Driving up through Cancun, I have spotted several football fields at the Preparatory and Universities that line the highway. The only team in Playa del Carmen is the Caballeros but they have been in existence now for a few years and have quite a few players and several age groups playing. I understand there is now a flag-football team for girls!

Tennis - Despite the heat, tennis is a very popular past-time here on the Riviera Maya. So much so, that it is a challenge to get court time. Signing up for regular clinics is a good way to keep up your game and get your kids involved as well. PLAY Tennis Academy is a very popular tennis program for children in the region. They have classes for all ages and levels of play. The multilingual tennis pros utilize a teaching program based on PLAY+ STAY of the International Tennis Federation. Using the new "PLAY + STAY" method, kids of all skill levels learn the proper technique and form for each of the strokes used in the fast paced game of tennis! Children will develop important motor skills with the racket in a manner suitable for children at all levels of play. PLAY Tennis also offers private lessons, master clinics, tournaments and a summer camp for kids. My kids attended last summer and loved it!

Sailing - Sailing is a sport that brings its participants in continuous contact with nature and helps develop self esteem and decision making skills in young people. A relatively new offering, the sailing club in Puerto Aventuras is already attracting a great following. Captains in the making train on easily maneuverable Optimist sailboats, perfect for young ones. The Porvenir Sailing Club is located south of Puerto Morelos and just ten minutes north of the famous Playa del Carmen, on the beach between the Blue Bay Resort and the Haciendas Tres Rios Resort. This location provides fantastic sailing conditions for beginners to advanced sailors in a relaxed, off-the-beach sailing program. The Porvenir fleet is comprised of 6 Lasers, 12 Optimists, a 21 foot sailing coach boat and a 15 foot inflatable boat. The sailing program for beginners is run in the Optimists. Sailing is on Friday afternoons (3-6 pm) and Saturday's (11am-2pm). The sailing program for more advanced sailors is conducted in the Lasers. Golf - All of the wonderful golf courses along the Riviera Maya offer golf clinics and private lessons for players of all ages and skill levels. You can check with your local pro to find a class that is appropriate for your young Greg Norman. If your children are really serious about golf, you are in luck! One of the finest golf schools in the world has a base right here on the Riviera Maya. The Jim McLean Golf School has a satellite at Mayakoba's El Cameleon Golf Course. El Cameleon is also home to the Mayakoba Classic, the only PGA event held outside of the United States. The Junior Elite Golf Camp is a Play + Stay option more geared towards established Junior golfers coming in from abroad but lessons can be arranged for children living locally who would like ongoing instruction.

Martial Arts - Until we moved to Mexico, I knew next to nothing about Martial Arts. When my then 6 year old son approached me wanting to enroll in Taekwon do, I was surprised but open to the idea. He began his instruction after school at Papalote under Marcos Carillo and, as he progressed, moved on to taking more advanced classes in the studio at Gran Fraternidad Marcial. Cole and his classmates, boys and girls ages 4 and up, excelled under the tutelage of Professor Carillo. I cannot say enough about our experience with Professor Marco. Something to note: If you are looking for a teacher who is going to teach your kids to be "fighters", this may not be the studio for your family. The focus is on personal growth and achievement, respect and self-discipline. He helps the children to take the self-discipline they develop in class and use it in their lives outside of the Academy and off the mat. Cole only stopped pursuing this sport late last year when he decided to dedicate more time to competitive riding. The center offers instruction in Taekwon Do, Judo, Jiu Jitsu Brasileno, Aikido and Muay Thai although you will need to check the age restrictions for each discipline.

Swimming Clubs/Teams - Swimming is somewhat of a seasonal activity here on the Riviera Maya. While the water temperature in the ocean fluctuates very little from summer to winter, our swimming pools become quite cold during the winter months. For those who have just arrived from the great white north, the chilly water may be just fine, a welcome relief from the North Atlantic/Pacific or swimming in mountain lakes and rivers. After a few years down here in the tropics, your metabolism acclimates to the temperatures of the region and the thought of jumping into a pool in January becomes less enticing! It sounds silly, but you are going to have to trust me on this one. Competitive swimmers will want to contact Nadadores de Quintana Roo for the best and most up to date information on training and events.

Horseback Riding - Despite my best efforts, both of my children somehow managed to inherit my passion for horses. It didn't rear its head until two years ago but when the bug bit, they both fell hard. We now have two horses and I spend a great deal of my Mom time at the stables or shuttling my aspiring show jumpers and their steeds to competitions. If you children are interested in horseback riding, competitive or otherwise, you will want to visit Hipico Playa del Carmen and the owner/director Paco Magallon. Honestly, I don't think there is a finer person to trust your children with, in or out of the ring. There is also a good club in Puerto Aventuras listed below. Living further north toward Puerto Morelos and Cancun? There is El Rey Polo Club to consider as well as Hacienda Andalucia, Centro Ecuestre del Caribe and the newest addition to the Quintana Roo equestrian scene, Instituto Equestre Nacional, all of which have fine facilities and excellent trainers. Very young children and those who are more interested in getting to know the horses and how to care for them may be well suited for Hipico Playa del Carmen's new "Cowboy Kids" classes organized by Paco Magallon's son, and accomplished rider, Diego. Rather than placing an emphasis on competitive skills, Diego helps his young students to first build a relationship with the horses in a manner inspired by Monty Roberts, the original horse whisperer. They learn about all the aspects of horse care as well as basic equitation skills. The only requirements for students? A love of horses...and carrots.

Gymnastics/Acrobatics If your children are already serious gymnasts or young gymnasts who show real promise in the sport you will need to look outside of Playa del Carmen to continue their training. There are some excellent training facilities and world class coaches in Cancun. If you children are promising competitors, you will be well advised to make transportation arrangements and utilize the more professional gyms. If your kids are just starting out or just want to have some fun, these local options can get them going so that they can learn the skills and techniques necessary to become proficient in the various disciplines of gymnastics. I hear that the acrobatics classes at Evolve and Center 8 are a blast!

Yoga is a very popular activity for adults here on the Riviera Maya and now, a few classes just for children have begun to attract a loyal following. Music/Voice - Without a doubt, Explayarte is the place to go for music instruction in Playa del Carmen. They offer instruction for all levels in guitar, base guitar, violin, drums, keyboard as well as vocal instruction and chorus. Students who attend the El Papalote's preparatory (high school) program, Bachillerato Naciones Unidas, may also choose a "double-major", splitting their studies between academics at Papalote and music at the Explayarte campus. There are other music schools in town but we like this one for the family-friendly atmosphere and the all-inclusive vibe encouraged by the administration and the instructors. The teachers are kind and enthusiastic and all the kids just love it there.

Drama/Music Theater - Years ago, just before our family made the move to Playa del Carmen, Rob and I happened upon a surprisingly good production of "Jesucristo Superestrella" being performed in the small park down by the Cozumel ferry dock. Flash ahead eight years and my daughter is currently in rehearsals for an upcoming production of "Seussical", led by the same director, Shane Southcott. After huge successes with the reprise of "Jesus Christ Superstar" followed by "Pippin" and "CATS", the musical theater program at Explayarte is now really taking off! When an audition is announced, the hallways are packed with aspiring actors and actresses, children and adults alike. The fact that the school also offers voice and dance classes assures that their students can work toward being "triple threat" performers. If you live in Playa but your children dream about the lights on Broadway, Explayarte is the place to be!

Selecting a school and enrolling your child is only one part of a well-rounded education for your child. The extra-curriculars they choose can be just as important to their development as the academics. They will certainly be essential as your child starts to make friends, develop a social circle and assimilate into the life of a "Playa-child". Just as no one school is right for all children, no one school is likely to offer all the sports, art, music, drama and other activities that your child wants to pursue.

I will likely be keeping this list of activities bookmarked and updated regularly as more options become known to me. If you have anything to add to help fill out this list, please let me know by leaving a comment. Fundraiser for Otoch Paal Montessori School in Akumal

Saturday Aug. 11, 2012 Tiramisu Restaurant in Puerto Aventuras will host a fundraising dinner and evening of entertainment to support the Otoch Paal Montessori School in Akumal. Cocktails will begin at 7:15 pm with dinner and entertainment starting at 8:00 pm.

Please come along to this very worthy cause. The Otoch Paal Montesorri School is a wonderful facility offering a very high level of learning to all local children. Otoch Paal is a community school financed by donations and parent work-share which provides the children of Akumal and surrounding communities with a solid education based on the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Welcome Summer!! Let the Wild Rumpus Start!

Today was the first day of summer for most children. Classes and moving up ceremonies were all completed last week and many Playa del Carmen summer camps began today. After much poking and cajoling, Cat and Cole finally dragged themselves out of bed and into their riding gear for their first day of riding camp at Hipico Playa del Carmen.

Already seasoned riders, they were looking forward to seeing what new students this summer would attract. It was a pretty good turnout this morning. My two were joined by six other children, all with varying degrees of experience. For some, it was their first time on a horse! I was, uncharacteristically, without my camera this morning but tagged along to snap some photos on my iPhone

Hipico Director, Paco Magallon, and Junior Instructors, Diego and Valentina, worked with all the kids, introducing them to their mounts for the day. The children took turns grooming one of the horses; brushing, currying and picking hooves.

Working with the lunge line helped Paco determine what each rider's comfort level was. The two older girls both had some previous riding experience and took turns doing some simple gymnastics on gentle Jabil.

Next, paired up with one of the stable's reliable lesson horses, the kids worked their way around the arena and practiced controlling the motion and direction of the horses around barrels and other obstacles. Junior instructors Diego and Valentina joined them and gave one on on instructions to each child, correcting positions and physical cues along the way.

Finally, when Paco was assured that each rider had control of his or her horse and felt comfortable enough to leave the ring, he took the group for a trail ride through the jungle.

Once back at the barn, the kids took a quick break for a snack, changed clothes, doused themselves in bug repellent and went for a trek through the jungle to a secret cenote not far from the stables. The remote cenote was clean and clear and cold. The perfect place for the kids to chill out and splash around and get to know each other a bit better.

It was a great first day of summer for the kids at Hipico Playa del Carmen Summer Riding Camp. If you think your kids might enjoy this experience, it's not too late to sign up. Well, it looks like the rain clouds have finally drifted away from the Riviera Maya and left us with hot sunny summer-in-Playa weather. The kids are getting anxious, knowing that exams are over and the last days of school are fast approaching. Many of you will spend the summer traveling, perhaps back to your home countries to visit with family and friends in more temperate climates. The rest of us will be stuck here in the heat looking for ways to keep the kids entertained and out from underfoot for the next two months!

By popular demand we have once again put together a listing of summers camps and programs for children on the Riviera Maya. I have not yet heard back from all of the organizations who I have reached out. I will update the list as new offerings come in and re-post it on the BuyPlaya Facebook page. There are some nice options again this year for children of all ages, both day programs and sleep over camps. These are the programs and summer camps that we have found so far for kids living in Playa del Carmen and all across the Mayan Riviera. Whether your children are interested in sports, nature, the arts or even a traditional sleep-over camp experience, there are a variety of options to choose from.

This is brand new summer offering and one our family is very excited about. Since its inception about a year and a half ago, the sailing club in Puerto Aventuras has attracted a great following. Intermediate and advanced dance students, ages 13 and up, are invited to participate in an intensive summer dance program covering a variety of significant dance forms. Classes will be lead by experienced dance instructors Liliana Alarcon, Ana Cuevas, Thalia Brena, Luisiana Leguzamon and Liliana Guerra. Each week-long module will include instruction in Street Jazz, Ballet, Modern and Lyric Dance, Hip Hop and and physical expression. Class size will be limited to just 15 students. Book Drive at Papalote School

The students in the 1er year of Preperatoria at Bachillerato Naciones Unidas/El Papalote School are conducting a community project in their Ethics and Values class. Under the supervision of their teacher, Miss Hannah, the students will be collecting and donating book to support the Public City Library. They are asking for your cooperation to collect books (in good condition). The goal is to ultimately collect 70 kg of books! If you have any books to contribute, there is a "drop slot" on the entrance gate to the school, which is located on Ave. 25 and calle 32. We appreciate your support for this cause.

Les informamos que los alumnos de 1º de Preparatoria están realizando un proyecto de ayuda a la comunidad en la clase de Ética y Valores a cargo de Miss Hannah y han decidido apoyar a la Biblioteca Municipal con la donación de libros; por este motivo pedimos de su colaboración para recolectar libros (en buen estado), la meta es juntar 70 kg de libros. En un costado de la reja de entrada del colegio sobre la Av. 25 se encuentra un contenedor en donde podrán depositar los libros que quieran donar. Agradecemos de antemano su apoyo a esta causa.
