This month marks an historic moment for Mayan world! December 21, 2012 marks the beginning of a new period called a baktun on the Mayan calendar. The new baktun is an opportunity for improvement, a chance to start things afresh according to the Mayan. It is the end of one Mayan "world"....

and the beginning of another!!

The ancient Mayan were master stargazers and recognized the special planetary alignment of this date as symbolic for our world. Whether you believe this to be the end of the world or you are looking forward to a new beginning this date has a special resonance throughout history!

Where will you be to celebrate the beginning and end of an of an era!? Here is a long list of suggestions!!

Join a traditional renewal ceremony led by a Mayan shaman and enjoy dances and ceremonies to welcome the new age! Get out your huipiles and your guayaberas or come dressed in white to the Plaza Fundadores in downtown Playa del Carmen between calle 2 and Juarez on 5th avenue at 6pm on Friday December 21, 2012 for a once in an age experience!

The Cancun holistic Center Akbal is hosting an evening of yoga and meditation events to welcome the new age.

Travel to the small town of Felipe Carillo Puerto, just south of Tulum, known as "the gateway to the Mayan world" for two days of events, festivities and Mayan ceremonies to say goodbye to one age and welcome the next.

The Casa de la Cultura in Felipe Carillo Puerto will be hosting many of the cultural events during this two day celebration of the end of the Mayan Calendar.

Arrive dressed in white with a white candle in hand to the impressive ruins of El Mecco, near Cancun between the hours of 9am and 4pm to participate in the close of the 13 Baktun and the opening of the new era hosted by Consejo Maya Nuevo Sol.

Head to the island of Cozumel to party like a rock star at Woody's. If the world ends you tab is FREE! The party starts at 5pm with a great line up of music and surprise gifts for everyone!

Share your positive vibes with the world! The Pyramid of Positive Thinking in Aldea Zama, Tulum is having a special celebration to usher in the new era. In Aldea Zama there will be a market place set up, conferences, and a a Pre-hispanic fusion dance show.

The Kin Festival in Tulum is putting out the call for unity, by inviting everyone to join them on Pescadores beach also called Playa Maya beach to share a night of concerts, artisans, sports exhibitions, cultural activities and food.

Canibal Royal, one of the hottest beach clubs in Playa del Carmen, is having a Do Over party sponsored by Adidas. This world famous party is here to celebrate the end of Baktun 13 and is sure to be a crazy good time!

The Time and Space Festival will be in Tulum for the days of the winter solstice, which happens to be the end of the Mayan calendar. The countdown has begun!

The Mundo Maya is teeming with festivals, parties and ceremonies for this very special date! Chichen Itza one of the most impressive Maya Ruins sites is going to be full of merry makers as well as the town of Piste, Yucatan. Welcome the first light of the new era with the sunrise ceremonies in Pueblo Sacbe, in Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Quintana Roo.

It's Turtle Nesting Season on the Riviera Maya!

It's turtle nesting season again on the Riviera Maya! Every year, adult female Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtles make their way to the beaches of the Riviera Maya, build nests and lay up to 150 soft-shelled eggs twice each season. When the baby turtles hatch (approx. 60 days later), they instinctively head for the water, using the light of the moon for navigation. They smell and taste the sand as they find their way to the ocean and remarkably will return to the very beach where they were born when it comes time for them to nest.

Our good friends at Cabanas Tulum and Ziggy Beach would like to remind everyone to take care during this special time and have shared with us a list of helpful recommendations to consider during this special time!

1. Do not use lights on the beach, shut off balcony lights, and cover all outside lights and windows if you are in a house/condo.

2. If you see a turtle coming ashore to lay their eggs, notify your hotel staff or turtle patrol if you happen to see them on the beach.

3. Do not approach the turtles (unless specifically at the invitation of turtle patrol), do not touch the turtles, definitely do not interfere with any part of the nesting process.

4. Do not take flash photography, this will definitely spook the mom.

5. Do not have beach parties during the nesting season.

6. Keep the beach free of litter or any obstacles that may get in the path of the turtle (bring in beach chairs at night, etc).

7. Keep pets indoors at night, barking dogs are not turtle-friendly.

8. Do not disturb the nests, if you see what you think is a nest that has not been marked, notify the hotel or the authorities.

If everyone works together and respects these rules, we can ensure a long and happy life for this endangered species and their continued visits to the Riviera Maya for years to come.

The best way to see the turtle nests and possibly baby turtles being released is to go on a night walk organized by CEA. Centro Ecologico Akumal is a non-profit environmental organization located in Akumal. They take out a maximum of 10 people each night at 9 pm. CEA is the only organization with permission to access certain beaches during the nesting season. The suggested donation is $15 for adults and $8 for children. Reservations are not accepted, so show up early if you can. There are also regular presentations on the CEA Turtle Watch Program, with slides of the sea turtles and a lecture about their evolution, ecology, behavior, the threats to their survival and how we can help them.

Don't Miss the 9th Annual Festival de la Tortuga Marina!

The 9th annual Sea Turtle Festival is scheduled for October 13 - 16 2011 in Tulum. The Festival de la Tortuga Marina is a free event whose mission is to raise awareness in residents and tourists alike about sea turtle protection.

This event will provide information about these magnificent creatures that are in danger of extinction, There will be arts, environmental and cultural events and activities related to the conservation of sea turtles. Information will also be available about the many organizations working to preserve the sea turtles and how you can contribute. This is a wonderful family event that should not be missed if you are in the area.

To protect the Sea Turtles during the nesting period (May through October) the following is recommended:

Avoid all types of lighting on the beach, including flash photography.

Do not leave objects such as chairs, lounge chairs, garbage on the beach.
Avoid building sand castles, walls or fences that may impede the turtles path to the sea.

Do not approach the turtles during the nesting process.

Not drive on the beach with motor vehicles.

Avoid loud sounds which endanger the work of the turtles during nesting.

Do not touch the turtles.

The sea turtle is an example of survival and harmony in the surrounding ecosystem. Over millions of years has shown its resilience and perseverance. More information and updates about the festival can be found on the festival Facebook page.

Midsummers Eve Food Festival and Fundraiser Planned in Tulum!

****DUE to incliment weather, the Tulum Food Festival has been postponed until Thursday July 7th!!****

An exciting food festival and fundraising event is being planned to to support the Tulum Living School Project and this year’s recipient school “Huricanes Kinder”. The event will take place on Tuesday, June 21 at 6:00pm at Charlie’s Restaurant and Bar in the Tulum Pueblo. This Gourmet Festival will celebrate both traditional Mexican cuisine as well as the gastronomic influences that have been brought to the Riviera Maya from around the globe! Given the diverse population of Tulum and the Mexican Caribbean, this is sure to be a treat for the taste buds. There will also be live music and a spectacular performance of Aztec dance to entertain the guests. Tickets will be 200 pesos per person which will include access to the fabulous array of dishes and two drinks from the bar.

Local restaurants are invited to participate by creating a signature dish that will serve 60-70 guests. There will also be an online raffle and a silent auction and local businesses and individuals are all encouraged to make a donation. Hotel stays, jewelry, apparel, scuba/snorkeling packages, massages, art pieces, adventure tours or anything you can think of will be gratefully accepted and will make help this event a huge success.
