Summer Camps and Activities for Kids on the Riviera Maya 2012

Well, it looks like the rain clouds have finally drifted away from the Riviera Maya and left us with hot sunny summer-in-Playa weather. The kids are getting anxious, knowing that exams are over and the last days of school are fast approaching. Many of you will spend the summer traveling, perhaps back to your home countries to visit with family and friends in more temperate climates. The rest of us will be stuck here in the heat looking for ways to keep the kids entertained and out from underfoot for the next two months!

By popular demand we have once again put together a listing of summers camps and programs for children on the Riviera Maya. I have not yet heard back from all of the organizations who I have reached out. I will update the list as new offerings come in and re-post it on the BuyPlaya Facebook page. There are some nice options again this year for children of all ages, both day programs and sleep over camps. These are the programs and summer camps that we have found so far for kids living in Playa del Carmen and all across the Mayan Riviera. Whether your children are interested in sports, nature, the arts or even a traditional sleep-over camp experience, there are a variety of options to choose from.

Parque La Ceiba Curso de Verano (Day Camp)

Children ages 5 - 12 are invited to spend the summer break in the jungle at Parque la Ceiba in Playa del Carmen. This summer the camp will invite your child to "Discover Your Own Element". The goal of this program is to encourage the development of a child's sensory curiosity, imagination and creativity through artistic, cultural and recreational activities related to environmental awareness. To help our children learn about our natural environment, this course will address four major themes: EARTH, WATER, AIR and FIRE. Children will progress through the 6 week course participating in story-telling, art activities, environmental education activities, games of skill and training and tours related to all kinds of interesting environmental themes. There will also be a weekly visit of an animal of the jungle. Prices include all materials. Instruction will primarily be given in Spanish providing a wonderful opportunity for children new to Mexico to immerse themselves in the language in a casual and fun environment without the pressures of school. This is the 4th year that Parque la Ceiba has offered a summer camp for local children and it is very popular. This is brand new summer offering and one our family is very excited about. Since its inception about a year and a half ago, the sailing club in Puerto Aventuras has attracted a great following. Captains in the making train on easily maneuverable Optimist sailboats, perfect for young ones. This summer the Club Deportivo de Velas in Puerto Aventuras will offer both sailing instruction for children 7 -14 and windsurfing instruction for teens and adults 14 and over. Want your kids to experience the traditional "sleep-over" camp like you did as a child? Check out Camp Agua Azul! This summer camp is located just about 1.5 hours from Playa del Carmen near Nuevo Valladolid. Children ages 6 - 15 will spend 1 or 2 weeks sleeping in tents, surrounded by lush jungle and mystical cenotes. Campers will learn about the environment they live in and enjoy all sorts of games and activities including swimming in cenotes, kayak races, water zip-lines, campfires, foam wars, obstacle courses, competitions and all the fun you would expect from a true summer camp. Boys and girls, ages 6 and older, will spend their mornings at the Hipico Playa del Carmen learning all about horses; how to feed and care for the animals and their tack. Cooking is a tool of life, one that makes us truly independent. It is a skill that can be used at home, to share with friends, as a gift we can give to others as well as to ourselves. This summer let your children learn about food from a whole new and fun perspective. Every Saturday beginning in June, classes are available for kids ages 6-13 in small groups of just 10 students. The classes are held in a safe and sanitary environment with theory and skills offered in an age appropriate manner. Explayarte Summer Music/Dance/Theatre Classes (Day Camp)

Explayarte has always been the place to go for music instruction in Playa del Carmen. They offer professional instruction for all levels in guitar, base guitar, violin, drums, keyboard as well as vocal instruction and chorus, theatre arts and dance. This year, Explayarte will be offering a variety of summer programs for children ages 6 and up. More experienced musicians can take intensive courses in Rock, Jazz and Latin music. Dance classes will be available for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. Class rooms and studio spaces are fully air-conditioned. "We Move Forward" - An International Women's Day Retreat on Isla Mujeres!

New ONDARTE Artist Residency Program Begins in Akumal

Applications are now being accepted at ONDARTE Artist Residency Program in Akumal, Mexico. ONDARTE was born from the desire to support international artists and promote cultural exchange between creators from all walks of life. Alec Von Bargen, the founder of ONDARTE, is an artist. Maribel Bianchi, the residency director is an artist at heart who has been surrounded by art and artists her entire life.

The new ONDARTE Artist Residence offers a pristine environment in the heart of the Riviera Maya, perfect for the interaction of artists with nature. ONDARTE'S grounds are spread out over 2 hectares. The area is comprised of the living quarters, open-air working areas, temperature controlled storage rooms, a communal kitchen/dining area and tranquil relaxation areas set around the swimming pool and tropical gardens. Artists have full access to the grounds so that they may create wherever they feel inspired. The facility has furnished suites for the artists in residence, all with private bathrooms and work desks for artists who require a more private area to complete their endeavors. Every effort is made to support the unique creative processes of the residents.

ONDARTE is located in the small town of Akumal, between the Caribbean Sea and Yal Ku lagoon. Akumal has always been a creative haven where people come to live in harmony with nature and art. Opportunities can also be arranged for artists in residence to work with local artists, artisans or craftspeople. Participants who are interested in leading art classes for young children of the area are encouraged to do so and these classes can be set up by ONDARTE organizers.

A jury of local and international experts in their fields decide on the acceptance of the applicants. Only submissions with complete applications will be considered. The jury meets once/twice a month. Admission consideration is continuous. The applicant will be notified within two-three weeks of their sent application. There is a monthly fee of $1000 usd per artist. Upon acceptance, ONDARTE will be more than happy to assist any qualifying applicant with recommendations / invitation letters to help them apply for and secure financial support.
