March 2 Concert Fundraiser Supporting Otach Paal

On Saturday, March 2nd at 6:00 p.m., come to Tulum for a special concert from A Viva Voce! and support the children of Otach Paal, the community Montessori school in the little town of Akumal.

A Viva Voce is a group of teachers from Cancun that joined together for their love of music to perform and entertain all age groups in the Riviera Maya area. The group blends sounds from the Renaissance madrigals and contemporary jazz with Mexican and Latin American styles. Tickets are only $200 pesos and will be sold at the Hotel Akumal Caribe office under the arch in Akumal. The Otoch Paal Montessori School in Akumal invites YOU to participate in their 2012 Christmas Posada. The celebration will be held at the school on Saturday December 15th starting at 6pm. The event is open to the public and is free of charge. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to investigate another educational option for their young children. The school currently has openings for pre-school children from 18 months to kindergarten!

Centro Comunitario Otoch Paal Montessori School in Akumal offers high-quality early childhood education to families in the Riviera Maya. Otoch Paal opened in 2004 with only two classrooms and has grown to include an English classroom, an additional preschool classroom (ages 3-5) and a kiosk for school events.

The school does not receive any state/federal funding, but also does not function like a "typical" private school. From its inception, Otoch Paal has been a community center based on a grassroots model of participation. It was created to help fill an urgent need for the low-income families of the area, many of whom are working parents with few alternatives for child care. Education at Otoch Paal is available to all children, provided the parents are willing to put in time to fulfill their service at the school. Only 25% of the families at the school pay full tuition. Low-income parents who otherwise would not be able to afford education of this caliber (the majority of the school's families) are given the option to contribute their labor in lieu of paying tuition, with each parent doing three hours of work per week at the school. They engage in tasks such as helping make the classroom materials, and cleaning and maintenance of the center and its grounds.

Stand Up! Records is proud to present The First Annual Akumal Comedy Festival. The festival will take place on April 19-21st, 2012 in the heart of Mexico's lovely Mayan Riviera.

FREE COMEDY!

This completely free comedy festival will feature 18 professional comedians from the United States performing seven shows in four distinct venues in Akumal over three days. The Festival is the brain child of Grammy Award winning president and founder of Stand Up! Records Dan Schlissel and comedian/actor Gus Lynch (Saving Silverman, North Country, I Spy), who seek to showcase the finest professional and fastest rising stars in stand up comedy, as well as the people, restaurants, and businesses of Akumal. This festival will be fundraising to build a playground for the local children of the Akumal Pueblo.

AWARD WINNING FILMMAKERS

Matthew Olson and Token Media will be working with the comedians to produce comedy short films and multimedia content featuring the most beautiful and distinct locales and hot spots in Akumal all week long! The Akumal footage captured by Token media will be premiered at the Minneapolis St Paul International Film Festival on April 26, 2012!

BUILD A PLAYGROUND

There are no public play facilities at all for the local children in Akumal and we would like to change that. This project will also tie in to the protection of the Mayan ruins in Akumal, as at the moment this archeological park has been zoned for urban development. As part of the festival, local Akumal children will perform a specially choreographed dance routine at 5 of the 7 shows. We have lots of fabulous raffle prizes to be won and 100% of the proceeds will go to the children's playground project.

THE LINE UP!!

The Akumal Comedy Festival will be celebrated in 4 venues in the village of Akumal over 3 days starting on April 19, 2012 at 5.30pm. The Festival will culminate on Saturday, April 21st on the Cancha at Plaza Ukana with a free show featuring Festival Headliner and Stand Up! Records recording artist Chad Daniels. Chad has appeared on The Tonight Show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and his Comedy Central Presents special was voted #5 of all time in 2010. He was also just crowned winner of the 2012 LaughFest Stand Up Competition presented by Gun Lake Casino. The evening will also feature a "Best of the Fest" lineup, live music from the Akumal Drummers featuring music from the kirtan band Mauna, Arpason, and The Kalua Band, street vendors and artists, as well as plenty of food, beverage, and alcohol options.

Mark you calendars for March 9th from 5:30 -7:00 pm for a SILENT AUCTION to support Hekab Be Biblioteca de Akumal.Held at the Lol Ha Beach Bar during Happy Hour, the auction will feature the paintings of well-known muralist Oscar Romero and other artists, hand crafts from Bali, Indonesia and Panama.

Hekab Be Library promotes literacy and learning opportunities among children and adults in Quintana Roo, Mexico, in order to meet their educational goals. Serving as a tool for educational, social and economic progress, we provide individuals and families with resources for scholastic advancement, helping improve people’s language and literacy skills, while promoting cultural preservation and awakening the desire to understand other customs and ways of thinking.

The Hekab Be Library acquaints young children with books, provides learning resources for school children, offers literacy and writing classes in the Spanish language for adults, offers classes in the English language for older children and adults, conducts programs in the Maya language, and offers classes in the Maya language.

Come and enjoy the beach bar and help us raise money for our local English-Spanish library serving visitors and locals in the community.

CEA (Centro Ecologico Akumal) Festival February 22 - 29, 2012 - The theme for this year's festival is "Waves of Change".

The Silent Auction will kick off all the festivities on February 22. The Gala Dinner will wrap it all up on February 29.
