Greetings from sunny Playa del Carmen!!

Once again, our little blog "Life's a Beach" was nominated for the About.com Readers Choice Award for Favorite Mexico Blog. I just found out that I am now a finalist. Huzzah!!

But wait...it get's even better! "Life's a Beach" blog was not the only nod toward the Riviera Maya!

2012 Feria de Playa del Carmen Sport Fishing Tournament

The second annual Feria del Carmen Sport Fishing Tournament in Playa del Carmen will take place tomorrow, Saturday July 14, leaving from the beach at 8:00 am sharp in front of Playa del Carmen's historic Parque Fundadores. First place in this exciting contest will bring a cash prize of 25 thousand pesos!

This fishing tournament is part of the sports program of the Feria del Carmen schedule of events which also includes the children's baseball championships, regional motocross championships, the "Ruta del Delfin" swim competition, the "Copa Virgin del Carmen" children's soccer tournament, the Toño Aldeco Cavelcade, the annual Cycling Classic, the "Mr. Playa" Body-building competition, roller skating, children and youth cycling, and the Martin Ubieta Horse races and Equestrian Show and more!

This year, the winners will be awarded 25 thousand pesos for 1st place, 15 thousand pesos for 2nd, 10 thousand for 3rd, 5 thousand for 4th and 5 thousand for 5th place. In addition prizes will be awarded to the anglers who bring in the 3 largest species of the day.

With this tournament, the organizers hope to resurrect one of the most important traditions of Playa del Carmen, which originated as a fishing village.The organizers hope to exceed the number of boats that participated last year, when 27 boats registered representing Cozumel, Puerto Aventuras, Puerto Morelos and Solidaridad, the host municipality.

3rd Annual BuyPlaya 5K Spring Race Set for March 25, 2012 in Playa del Carmen

With just a few days remaining before the third annual BuyPlaya 5K Spring Race, organizers, parents and local business owners are kicking into high gear for this exciting fundraising event for Ak Lu'um International School. On March 25 at 7:45am, participants will run, walk or stroll the 5 kilometer course leaving from the Parque Leona Vicario, making a loop through the picturesque Playacar resort community and finishing in the historical Parque Fundadores on the shores of the Mexican Caribbean.

"We are delighted to support this family event every year," reports Rob Kinnon, Ak Lu'um parent and owner of BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors. "Every year we receive more and more support from fellow Riviera Maya business owners making it possible to provide invaluable educational opportunities to local families and their children." Ak Lu'um is Mexico's first ecological school and an ambitious undertaking. Set on a self-sustaining campus in the jungle outside of the city of Playa del Carmen, Ak Lu'um is successfully integrating education and ecological responsibility. Time for the 7th Annual Three-Legged Bar Crawl for the Bomberos!

Oh dear Lord, is it that time of year already? I'm guessing by now, most of you have recovered from last year's Three-legged Bar Crawl/Race so grab a partner, wring out your liver, get your drinking shoes on and get ready to do it again! This year, the event falls on St. Patrick's Day but you'll need more than the luck of the Irish to win this race!

Start/ Finish: La Ranita Bar on Calle 10 between 5th and 10th (in the Hotel La Rana Cansada)

The Bomberos' Training Academy is now going into its 11th session, an effort funded by donations from residents, visitors and Riviera Maya business leaders. Last year, over $30,000 mxn was collected during this fundraising effort, money that will go toward the purchase of updated equipment, training and community services. In past years several departments have been gifted with Jaws of Life, equipment which is invaluable in the effort to save lives. The annual Bomberos' Training Academy, initiated by Brian Borjesson, provides essential instruction for local firemen teaching them to effectively use these newly acquired tools. With support from guest instructors from the United States, this week-long training exercise is often the only organized instruction available to new firefighters. Obviously, the more money raised the better!

Date Announced for 3rd Annual BuyPlaya "Corre Por Ak Lu'um" in Playa del Carmen

Once again, Ak Lu'um International School, Mexico's first ecological school, is pleased to invite all Riviera Maya athletes and families to participate in the third annual ‘BuyPlaya 5K Run for Ak Lu'um', an exciting 5K race through the streets of Playa del Carmen. Sponsored by BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors, the leading agency for Playa del Carmen real estate, the race will take place on March 25, 2012 at 7:45 am sharp.

Participants will run, walk or stroll the 5 kilometer course leaving from the Parque Leona Vicario, making the loop through Playacar and finishing in the historical Parque Fundadores. This year, the organizing committee has opened the race to professional level athletes offering special prizes for the 1st place winners in both the Professional Male and Professional Female categories. "We fielded so many inquiries from professional runners and running groups before last year's event that we felt compelled to open the race to this level of competition." Explained race coordinator Gabriela Nuñez, "We hope this will take the event itself to a whole new level and draw even more attention to the school and it's generous supporters.

Participants may run, walk or stroll, competing as individuals or as a family. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Professional Male, Professional Female, Amateur Male (13 years and up), Amateur Female (13 years and up), Children (6 - 12 years) and Families (3 or more participants).

Registration fees are $200 mn per adult participant, $150 mn per child and $100 mn for each individual participating in a family group. 2nd Annual Family Eco-Challenge at Ak Lu'um!

There are only a few days left before the 2nd annual Eco Reto 2011, a unique eco challenge where families are invited to build the greenest and most original toy or game. Ak Lu'um International School is preparing its jungle campus to receive environmentalists, government representatives and families from the Riviera Maya who will present their original creations to a select panel of judges. The contest and Eco-Fair will be held on December 11from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm at the Ak Lu'um International School in Playa del Carmen.

Families are invited to design and build a unique toy or game that encourages play without doing harm to the environment. Submissions must be constructed using organic materials, materials that come from sustainable sources and/or recycled objects. Toys and Games submitted will be judged in the following categories: Most original, most beautiful, longest lasting/most durable, greenest/eco-friendly. Confirmed to attend the event are environmental leaders from the municipio of Solidaridad, representatives from SEP, SEMARNAT and UNESCO and representatives from Flora y Fauna y Cultura de México A.C. Local businesses has generously supported the event by donating prizes for the four different categories.

Prizes to be awarded will include passes for Xcaret, a boat trip donated by Lucky too, a swim with dolphins from Delphinarium and an electric scooter courtesy of Carpe Diem Communications among other prizes.The grand prize for the family who meets the four categories is a year's free tuition at Ak Lu'um International School worth over $43,000 pesos and is transferable.

Don't Miss the 9th Annual Festival de la Tortuga Marina!

The 9th annual Sea Turtle Festival is scheduled for October 13 - 16 2011 in Tulum. The Festival de la Tortuga Marina is a free event whose mission is to raise awareness in residents and tourists alike about sea turtle protection.

This event will provide information about these magnificent creatures that are in danger of extinction, There will be arts, environmental and cultural events and activities related to the conservation of sea turtles. Information will also be available about the many organizations working to preserve the sea turtles and how you can contribute. This is a wonderful family event that should not be missed if you are in the area.

To protect the Sea Turtles during the nesting period (May through October) the following is recommended:

Avoid all types of lighting on the beach, including flash photography.

Do not leave objects such as chairs, lounge chairs, garbage on the beach.
Avoid building sand castles, walls or fences that may impede the turtles path to the sea.

Do not approach the turtles during the nesting process.

Not drive on the beach with motor vehicles.

Avoid loud sounds which endanger the work of the turtles during nesting.

Do not touch the turtles.

The sea turtle is an example of survival and harmony in the surrounding ecosystem. Over millions of years has shown its resilience and perseverance. More information and updates about the festival can be found on the festival Facebook page.

Beach Bocce Ball Comes to Playa del Carmen!!

Playa del Carmen's first ever Beach Bocce Ball Event is coming to Canibal Royal! Hosted by Canibal Royal, Latido de Mexico, and Playa Maya News, this one-of-kind event is one not to be missed! The tournament will be held on May 29^th 2011 from 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

Originally from Italy, Bocce Ball, has become a popular sport throughout the world and now beach bocce ball has made its mark. What could be better than playing right on the blue waters of the Caribbean in Playa del Carmen? Come on out and try something new and different and join the fun as a spectator or as a team member. Either way you are guaranteed to have an amazing day with food, drinks, fun, music, and plenty of laughs.

Sixteen teams, consisting of 2 people per team, will compete for the top spot, and 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place prizes will be granted to the top 3 teams. 6th Annual Three-Legged Bar Crawl Raises $30,000 MXN

On April 10, 2011, Playa del Carmen residents and visitors gathered together to participate in one the region's best loved events, the annual Three-Legged Bar Crawl to support the Bomberos of Quintana Roo. This year, marks the 6^th running of this event. A record 16 teams strapped themselves together for this fun-filled race through the busy streets of this seaside city encouraged by the cheers of onlookers and event sponsors. Organized by Brian Borjesson and a team of volunteers, the three legged race is held every year to raise funds for the firefighters. Borjesson is the President of both the Bomberos de la Riviera Maya A.C. and Patronato de Protección Civil para la Riviera Maya A.C. two organizations instrumental in providing much needed support to our regional fire departments. As Comandante of the Bomberos, he has donated his time and his expertise to help ensure the safety of Riviera Maya residents by securing equipment and training for firefighters throughout the state of Quintana Roo.

Until 1995, this city did not have a fire department. If your home or place of business caught on fire, the only chance of saving life and property was a community bucket brigade. This year, over $30,000 mxn was collected during this fundraising effort, money that will go toward the purchase of updated equipment, training and community services. Special thanks go out to all the participating restaurants: Bar Ranita, Babe's Noodles and Bar, Manne’s Biergarten, Dirty Martini Bar, Bad Boys Beach Bar, The Tequila Barrel and Zenzi Beach Club. 16 teams participated in this year’s race, the winners John Bekas (In the Roo) and Jorge Armenta (Playa Dentist) finished the course in an astounding 17 minutes. BuyPlaya "Run for Ak Lu'um" Raises Funds for Ecological School

On the morning of March 20, Riviera Maya athletes and families gathered in Playa del Carmen’s Parque Leona Vicario to take their marks for the “Run for Ak Lu’um”, a 5K race sponsored annually by BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors, the premier brokerage for Playa del Carmen real estate. Over 100 runners, walkers and families with strollers weaved their way through the streets of the city and past the glamorous resort zone, finishing at the historic Parque Fundadores, overlooking the shores of the Caribbean.

Winners took home an official certificate of completion and prizes generously donated by local Riviera Maya businesses. The top finishers and times in each category were as follows:

The BuyPlaya “Run for Ak Lu’um” will be held again next year at the same time with an official date to be announced in January 2011. Organizers anticipate the event will grow over the years, ultimately attracting athletes from outside the Riviera Maya and drawing positive attention to the unique efforts of the school. “The Riviera Maya is so new and there is tremendous opportunity here. BuyPlaya ‘Run for Ak Lu’um’ Draws Support of Riviera Maya Business Owners

With just a few days remaining before the BuyPlaya 5K Spring Race, organizers, parents and local business owners are kicking into high gear for this exciting annual fundraising event. On March 20 at 7:45am, participants will run, walk or stroll the 5 kilometer course leaving from the Parque Leona Vicario, making a loop through the hotel zone in Playacar and finishing in the historical Parque Fundadores on the shores of the Caribbean.

“In its inaugural year, the ‘Run for Ak Lu’um’ drew over 100 participants. This year, the response has been even more enthusiastic!” reports Sandra Mancilla, Ak Lu’um parent and member of the race organizing committee. “The support from the community for the school has been remarkable. So many people have offered to donate prizes for the runners!” Ak Lu'um is Mexico’s first ecological school and an ambitious undertaking. Set on a self sustaining campus in the jungle outside of the city of Playa del Carmen, Ak Lu’um is successfully integrating education and ecological responsibility. The non for profit school has been a labor of love for the teachers, administrators and parents since its inception in 2006. Recently, during the COP16 Summit in Cancun, the small school made a splash in international headlines for its ‘Family Eco-Challenge’, a first of its kind event in Mexico.

Local businesses have been very generous with their support of this school and the annual race. BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors, title sponsor for the race, has been joined this year by Ink Me, a printing company in Playa del Carmen, LocoGringo.com and IntheRoo.com, two of the most reputable online sources of information about Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. Ak Lu'um International School Announces 2nd Annual ‘BuyPlaya 5K Run for Ak Lu’um’

Ak Lu'um International School, Mexico’s first ecological school, invites all Riviera Maya athletes and families to participate in the second annual ‘BuyPlaya 5K Run for Ak Lu’um’. Sponsored by Playa del Carmen’s leading real estate company, BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors, the race will take place on March 20, 2011 at 8:00am sharp.

Participants will run, walk or stroll the 5 kilometer course leaving from the Parque Leona Vicario, making the loop through Playacar and finishing in the historical Parque Fundadores. The course will be well marked and staffed with volunteers providing a safe and enjoyable event for runners of all ages and fitness levels. Participants may run, walk or stroll, competing as individuals or as a family. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

Adult Male (13 years and up)
Adult Female (13 years and up)
Children (6 - 12 years)
Families (3-6 members)

Registration fees are $150mn per adult participant, $100mn per child and $100mn for each individual participating in a family group. Registration forms are available on the race webpage http://www.akluum.com/correporakluum and participants must sign in with their completed forms the day of the race between 6:45am and 7:30am. Pre-Registration is strongly recommended and may be done Monday through Friday in the following locations: Abyss Dive Shop (9-5pm) and Ak Lu’um International School (8-2pm). Each runner will receive water during and after the race, fresh fruit and other snacks at the finish and an official ‘Corre Por Ak Lu’um’ t-shirt when they present their tag at the end of the race.
