What would it look like? How would the local people really dress, eat,
work, pray and go about their daily lives? Are you interested in a
cultural experience more meaningful than a quick stop for souvenirs
orchestrated by a big bus tours on your way home from the ruins. I'm
taking about a full day spent in a remote village talking with the local
residents, meeting with village elders, learning about the proud
history of the Maya in Quintana Roo. Personally, I am always on the
look-out for these kinds of opportunities and this visit to the town
of Señor arranged by Ojos Mayas and Xyaat Ecoturismo Comunitario Maya was just what I had
been hoping for.

Our group left from downtown Playa del Carmen at 8:00 am. The tours are purposefully limited in size and there were just enough people to fill a small shuttle bus. The village of Señor is located 189 km from
Playa, just to the west of Felipe Carillo Puerto. The trip took about 2 hours. The village
was established 150 - 200 years ago and many of its inhabitants
participated in the Yucatan Caste War. This is a community of
approximately 3,000 people. Maya is the predominant language. The
village elders between the ages of 60-90 speak only Maya. Their
children, now aged 40 - 60, speak Maya but understand Spanish. Their
grandchildren and great grandchildren speak a combination of Maya and
Spanish.

Our local guide for the day was Marcos Cante Canul.
Now 40 years of age, he started participating in the community's
cultural activities at age 15. He began organizing this particular
"tour"
in 2003. Marcos is a member of Xyaat, a community co-operative that
unites Maya communities with volunteers, guides and small tour
operators. During the day, we had an opportunity to meet local
residents, observe
daily work and living routines. Marcos speaks only Maya and Spanish and
his narrative throughout the day was translated into English for us by
Angel, our Ojos Mayas representative. The village elders who shared
their time and stories with us spoke only Maya which was translated
first into Spanish and then English to accommodate our group.

Henequén thread has been made in the Yucatan peninsula for
centuries and the process by which it is made has been passed down
from generation to generation. The Yucatán is known for its henequén. In
the early 20th century, more than 200,000 tons of henequén were
cultivated and processed in nearly 200 henequén processing facilities
throughout the region. The introduction of synthetic fibers in the
1950's caused an catastrophic decline in the demand for henequén. Less
than 20 plantations are now left functioning producing only produces
5,000 tons every year. The majority of these fibers are used for
decorative wall coverings and rugs, robes and twine.

Crecencio Pat, a respected village elder, demonstrated the
laborious technique by which the fibers are extracted from the "leaf" of
the agave plant, dried in the sun and then "spun" into stronger strands
and rope. I jumped at the opportunity to try it myself thus solidifying
my conviction that a career in manual labor would never be for me.

Crecencio Pat, 90 years young, is a descendant of Jacinto Pat, a general in the Yucatan Caste War (1847–1901).

Melipona bees and the remarkable organic
honey that they produce is a major component in the economic activity in the Mayan region.
The bees are tiny and sting-less and are kept in logs of felled trees rather than in modern bee keeping boxes. The nurturing of the bees and the harvesting of the honey is a long process producing little but the resulting liquid gold is highly prized and priced accordingly. The taste of this
nectar is more complex than from the more productive European and Africanized honeybees. The honey from this particular species is renowned for is curative properties and is in demand for use in health, culinary and beauty products. Unfortunately, the bees are now endangered as are the secrets to the traditional methods of caring for them. The village of Señor derives a good income from the sale of this desirable product and I was delighted to be able to see the operation up close and to taste a bit of the honey.

Plant based medicine has been practiced by the Maya for centuries and I was eager to learn more about the types of plants, the growing techniques and conditions and the various applications. Sra. Catalina Ek Pat is 75 years old and is the village Healer. She maintains a wide variety of local plants, each of which is kept for its curative properties. These medicinal plants have been used for generations and are commonly applied today for contemporary ailments. Again, Doña Catalina spoke only Maya but seemed obviously pleased as we all listened intently and eagerly rubbed and smelled each specimen as it was passed to us.

The patterns they were creating were simple geometric forms based on natural themes, plants and animals. This was an enjoyable past time for the women of the village and one that could bring in a bit more income from the sale of the finished pieces. Regardless for age or social standing, according to cultural norms, a woman must not bring in more than the man of the household so much of this hand work is done for pleasure or for the benefit of the village and might be used in trade for items needed for the family. The care they took in each tiny stitch was beautiful to observe and they did not seem to mind us intruding on their afternoon gathering. They smiled politely at our group and erupted in a cacophony of laughter when we tried to get our guide to demonstrate "hamaca-sutra"!

Don Abundio
Yama Chiquil is 92 years old according to his passport but he thinks he
may be as old as 94. He was quick to caution that the Maya used to
enjoy a life expectancy well past 100 years, even reaching 120 until the
introduction of modern processed foods and beverages. We stooped to enter his simple sturdy palapa home and settled in on the floor and folding chairs to listen to him speak. Under the light of a single bulb, we sat motionless, listening intently for almost an hour as he regaled us with stories of courage in the battles of the Caste War of the Yucatan ... Mayan resourcefulness and tenacity winning out over European might and gun-power! There is no
first-hand written history of the Maya and so it lives on
through story-telling and art. The promotion of oral history is instrumental
in celebrating and protecting the invaluable
contributions of the Maya, so that they can be shared with the outside
world and passed down through generations of children and grandchildren. I can't do justice to the stories Don Abundio told to us ... the secrets he shared. You will just have to go and experience it for yourself.

After
a fascinating visit with Don Abundio, we climbed back into the comfort
of our van for a trip to Laguna
Azul de Señor. Water is the heart of any Maya community. It touches
all
aspects of Maya life and is essential to the success of the village.
Images of the flora and fauna that inhabit the lagoon can be seen in
local art and handcrafts signifying its importance. The preservation of
the lagoon, the plants and animals that live in and near this
delicate eco-system is a high priority and this aspect of the tour
helps to raise awareness about protecting natural resources. A firm
commitment to the environment and the ongoing sustainability of
the communities is integral to the Ojos Mayas - Yxaat relationship.

No cultural experience would be
complete without a sampling of the local cuisine. At the end of a long but enjoyable day we were treated to a hearty lunch of eggs cooked with chaya, local squash, beans and the most delicious handmade tortillas that just kept coming fresh off the comal. Chilled agua de sandia was served out of hollowed gourds and helped put out the fire from the fresh habanero salsa that some of us had over-zealously applied to our meals. This was all prepared for us especially by one of the families of the Señor community. It was a delicious lunch and a nice time to sit a bit and relax and compare notes about our shared experience.

The
Mayan heritage, culture and history has been pivotal in the development
of the Yucatan and is crucial to its ongoing economic success. This "tour" is unique in that it enables visitors to take an in-depth look at a real Mayan society as it
functions today in southern rural communities including Señor and Tihosuco. This experience provides visitors an opportunity
to learn, strengthen and share
information about the Maya culture, their communities, ideologies,
traditions and current economic centers in 21st century Mexico.

Handmade souvenirs
are of course available for purchase and are all made by members of the community from natural
products, honey, regional plants and wood. The sale of this merchandise
provides communities the ability to build their economic
centers while visitors can carry home a reminder from this unique
experience to share with friends and
families back home.

The Ojos Mayas Maya village experience is structured to provide visitors
with a basic history and overview of the modern day Maya living outside
Felipe Carrillo Puerto in the
village of Señor. The residents of Señor have managed to
preserve traditional Maya language, culture,
heritage and culinary arts and are eager to share their lifestyle and
history with guests from around the world.
The creating and sustaining of relationships between small conscientious
tour operators such as Ojos Mayas and regional co-operatives like Xyaat
is how this ancient culture will continue to thrive in a modern world.

I personally came away with a more
significant understanding of the modern day Maya by learning about
their sustainable agriculture, medicine, handcrafts and cuisine and would jump at the chance to participate again. I am certainly going to be recommending this experience to our friends and customers. If you would like to experience this for yourself, visit the Ojos Mayas website for more information and to make a reservation. You can also connect with them on Facebook. Don't be surprised if you see me on your tour!

I moved to Mexico with my family in 2004 with the hope of offering our

Although I wanted to pull my hair out trying to get my kids wrangled into all the costumes and dance outfits they require for the various parties and events they had to attend last week, this is till my favorite time of the year in Mexico. This year we had Cat's dance group in the Xcaret parade down 5th Ave., another dance performance and a huge Halloween party at Papalote, the annual costume party at the barn and, of course, an evening at the Festival de Vida y Muerte at Xcaret.

Every year, I go on and on about the amazing work of the creative team, organizers and staff at Xcaret and this year will be no exception! The children's pavilion was awash with colored lights streaming through clouds of copal. Children moved from station to station, enjoying "cuenta cuentos" or storytelling about the ancient Maya and painting clay skulls. Always popular, the opportunities for face-painting were scattered throughout and children could choose from traditional Maya tribal designs or more modern calaveras. All the areas were well-manned with cheerful volunteers ready to explain the various exhibits and point new-comers in the right direction. I was pleased to see quite a few of the Preparatoria students from Papalote and Explayarte in the mix.

The sites, the sounds, the smells were almost overwhelming as we made our way through the park. We rested for a bit and grabbed a bite to eat at one of the many food stations set up throughout the park. Among the offerings, enormous tortas of pork and chicken tamales all serves up with pickled onions, crema, queso fresco and a variety of salsas. There were fresh baked pan muertos and crispy sugary churros for the kids. Cold cervezas and tequila kept the grownups sane.

November 1st (All Saints Day) is the day generally set aside to remember children and babies who have passed while November 2nd (All Souls Day) celebrates the lives of beloved adults who have moved on to the next realm. This is a time set aside every year for everyone to recognize, remember and celebrate the lives of their ancestors and departed loved ones. This time of reflection is unique to each family and the festivities vary regionally. After my trip to Tres Reyes last year for their celebration of Hanal Pixan, I was really able to see the strong distinctions between "modern" altars for Dia de los Muertos and more traditionally Maya altars erected for Hanal Pixan. Unfortunately for me, the altars were set up in a new area this year and by he time I made it there, many of the candles had been extinguished and some altars disassembled for the evening.

Although the Xcaret Vida y Muerte Festival is held for four days, the actual
Dia de los Muertos holiday is celebrated on the first two days of
November. These days tend to be the busiest at the park. I recommend coming as early as you can to be able to see as many of the shows and exhibits as possible. If you can manage a full day in the park, your regular pass will grant you admittance at the festival as well which is a great deal! I think next year, I will bring the kids one evening and then come back another night by myself to make sure to catch all the elements of the festival that I missed this year. We spent a lot of time in the children's pavillion and missed out on a lot of the shows that I would have liked to see. One thing is for sure, the festival organizers have made this event better every year, adding more and more value to the very reasonable ticket price. I am already looking forward to Vida y Muerte 2013!

The kids are getting anxious, knowing that exams are over and the last days of school are fast approaching. Many of you will spend the summer traveling, perhaps back to your home countries to visit with family and friends in more temperate climates. The rest of us will be stuck here in the heat looking for ways to keep the kids entertained and out from underfoot for the next two months!

By popular demand we have once again put together a listing of summers camps and programs for children on the Riviera Maya. I have not yet heard back from all of the organizations who I have reached out. I will update the list as new offerings come in and re-post it on the BuyPlaya Facebook page. There are some nice options again this year for children of
all ages, both day programs and sleep over camps. These are the programs and summer camps
that we have found so far for kids living in Playa del Carmen and all across
the Mayan Riviera. Whether your children are interested in sports,
nature, the arts or even a traditional sleep-over camp experience, there
are a variety of options to choose from.

Parque La Ceiba Curso de Verano (Day Camp)

Dates: July 19, 2012 - August 17, 2012
Time: 9 am - 2 pm
Location: Parque la Ceiba - Calle 1a sur and Diagonal 60, Col. Riviera Maya's most beloved events. It is a great honor to be
chosen to take part in this beautiful celebration. The lucky men and women chosen as canoeists train for months in anticipation of this test of endurance. At dawn, the boats and
the canoeists, dressed in traditional garb, leave Xcaret, once called Ppolé, and make the long and
arduous crossing to the island of Cozumel, a trip that takes these small
crafts over 6 hours. The following day, the participants paddle back to the ancient port city of Xaman Ha, known today as Playa del Carmen.

Thousands of years ago, people came from all across the Mundo Maya every Spring to order to worship Ixchel. Ixchel is well known as the Goddess of fertility but she was also believed to control general health, water and agriculture. The ancient Maya honored Ixchel in order to bring rain for crops and ensure a bountiful harvest for the year.

One of the special attractions enjoyed by the participants and invitees of the annual Travesia Sagrada at Xcaret is the traditional municipal market lovingly recreated by ancestors of the ancient Maya still living in this region. The public markets of the Maya were created for the use of all the inhabitants from all socio-economic classes. Most commonly traded were products created from natural materials of the region such as coconuts, seeds, thorns, shells and carved bones and gourds. Rare and desirable items such as colorful feathers, jewelery, jade and mirrors were exclusively traded by the upper classes.

Upon entering, guests trade in their pesos for small cloth sacks filled with cacao which they must use for currency to purchase the artifacts, crafts, food and drink and other items offered in the market. I had a great time checking out all the stalls and the various goods for sale. A haze of smoldering copal hung in the air adding to the atmosphere. Attendees lines up to try tortillas made fresh over the fire, tamales and warm atole. Guests could get up close and personal with animals indigenous to the region and have their faces painted with traditional designs and dyes.

Once the sun set, we all took our seats on the shores around Xcaret's Bahia Dos Playas to enjoy the inaugural dedication and the following show performed by some of the park's talented actors and dancers. Plans to initiate a ferry service from Tampa to Progresso are back on the table at United Caribbean Lines and they are looking for our input to help them move forward with this ambitious investment.

To help United Caribbean Lines make an informed plan to bring this ferry service to the Yucatan, please copy and paste the questionnaire below into an e-mail and send to BNIERENBERG@AOL.COM. Don't forget to share this blog post with your expat friends so that they too can weigh in on this exciting development.

"The past year has not brought a lot of forward momentum with the ferry project in spite of the interest of three different ferry companies and many false start dates. The scandals which precipitated personnel changes at the Progresso Port Authority certainly didn't help the situation either, however, things have been happening behind the scenes and from what I understand a number of feasibility studies have been done in the Tampa area showing the ferry project is viable but the inability to do a feasibility study within the expatriate community continues to be a stumbling block especially with investors.

Having learned from the mistakes of the previous ferry services in the area and responses from the previous expat surveys, the original plans have been modified. Super high speed ferries are now being considered to shorten the crossing time, frequent user plans, and even free vehicle bonuses are being considered. A year round weekly crossing schedule with frequency based on use patterns and peak seasons will be offered. As this service will take some years to become profitable investor backing will be the key to success.

I know many of you have already completed one or both of the previous surveys, but United Caribbean Lines is asking for our input once again. The results will directly influence investors and the more responses the better so please forward this email and ask everyone you know who may travel this direction to answer the questions and forward their responses to United Caribbean Lines. If you have access to expatriate websites, blogs or travel groups please have all your members respond and forward the questions on to any other websites and blogs you use anywhere in Central America. Even if you have no interest in using the ferry service please respond because part of the purpose is to try to establish how many expats live in the Yucatan and Central America.

If you are comfortable letting UCL know how to reach you they would like to extend some special courtesies, goodies, discounts and upgrades for helping them, when the ferry service begins. Just put your email address and mailing address in Central America on your answers to the questionnaire so UCL can reach you with the offers when they get started. "

Questionnaire for Ex-Pats living in Central America for new Ferry Service of United Caribbean Lines

1. Where in Mexico/Central America is your current home?

2. How many family members reside in your Mexico/Central American home?

3. Do you maintain a second home in the U.S. or Canada?

4. When you travel to go to the U.S or Canada to visit friends family etc. What is your destination?

5. How many times a year do you make this trip?

6. If you have more than one place you travel to in the U.S or Canada please list those additional destinations

7. How often to you travel to these secondary destinations each calendar year

8. When you go do you drive or fly?
On March 8, 9 and 10 2012, a special 3-day International Women's Day Conference, We Move Forward, is taking place on Isla Mujeres. The conference is for women interested in life-long learning, personal and professional growth at all stages of life. It is a well blended event that combines daily inspirational speakers with practical interactive workshops, movement sessions (yoga, pilates, batuka), a connection/networking session, local entertainment and a history lesson from a Mayan elder.

Being a quaint tropical island is part of Isla's

Isla Mujeres is situated in the turquoise Caribbean waters of
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, a 15-minute ferry ride from the city of
Cancun. At one time, all of Isla Mujeres was a Mayan sanctuary dedicated to
Ix Chel, Goddess of Fertility, Reason, Healing and Happiness, a goddess
in whom the Maya put great trust and hope. Her temple sits on Isla’s
southern-most & Mexico’s eastern-most point. It is here that Mexico
is first blessed with the dawn of each new day.

WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:

Vision - Your experience starts the moment you register. You will
receive a ‘Note To Self’ that contains the beginnings of self-discovery,
your personal vision of your desired future. Begin it. Bring it.
Shape it while on Isla.

Voice – Speakers will tell their inspiring stories, and facilitators
will guide the sharing of all – everyone has a voice and will be heard.

Values – Goodness, learning, fun and contribution are the values guiding
this event. What values guide your actions? Join us and you will see.

Vessel – Our bodies physically move us forward to our own beat. At the
event, you get to choose the mind, body, movement session that is
playing your tune.

Together we will share an experience like no other –
we will feel the impact that personal vision, values, voice and vessel
have on our ability to move us forward in a desired direction. And, we
will begin to experience all of the fun there is to be had along the
way. While this is primarily an English speaking event, there are Spanish speaking options offered. Come meet and be inspired by renowned women. Share your story and
learn from others. Find your own beat. Connect and clasp hands with
others. Move forward.

Not my first time at a TOP press conference, having headed up the Marketing Committee for the first two seasons, but my first time attending purely in the role of Sponsor. There was a good turnout for the press conference, a nice mix of corporate sponsors like myself, press agents and media reps and members of The Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen who will once again be managing the distribution of the donation from this year's event.

On hand to speak to the press was Monica Hartlief, three year veteran of the TOP committee and this year's Chairperson, Hector Escobedo representing the Chefs of the Riviera Maya, Carlos Espindola, Manager of Restaurant Tierra Espana, President of the Playa del Carmen Chapter of The Rotary Club, Francisco Santamaria, and Lilia Gordian from Diamonds International®, the esteemed title sponsor for this year's event. Each spoke passionately about their commitment to supporting the community and participating in events such as Taste of Playa that draw positive attention to this beautiful and diverse region of Mexico. One of the presenters remarked that Taste of Playa was the finest and most well organized culinary event on the Riviera Maya. Having been a part of Taste of Playa since its inception and recalling the struggles during our first year, it was wonderful to hear the event referred to in such complimentary terms. The members of the Executive Committee, also on hand to meet and greet the media, all glowed like proud parents....and with good reason!

Over the past 12 months, I've certainly missed sitting in on the planning meetings, spending time brainstorming with my girl-friends on the Executive Committee and it was great to see them all again and to catch up on the plans for this year's event. It is obvious that the committee has implemented quite a few changes based on feedback from the two previous years and carefully incorporated these adjustments into the grand plan. From what I have been privy too, Diamonds International® Taste of Playa 2011 is going to be the best one yet!

Diamonds International® Taste of Playa will take place on Sunday November 20, 2011 from 3pm - 9pm in the Parque Fundadores in Playa del Carmen. This year, I look forward to enjoying the event and sampling each one of the signature dishes presented by our participating Chefs. Secretly, I will still be a bundle of nerves, keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes off without a hitch and saying a special prayer to Chac and the CFE Gods for good weather and an uninterrupted electrical current!

The Little Mexican Cooking School Grows at New Location

The Little Mexican Cooking School in Puerto Morelos, voted TripAdvisor best attraction in the Yucatan Peninsula, has relocated to a larger, more interactive space this month for the first time since its opening in 2009.

Instructing Chef Pablo Espinosa taught the first class in the new location October 18, introducing a new format that offers a fully hands-on experience. Departing from the original, demonstration-heavy curriculum, students are now invited to create the dishes they learn about from scratch. Classes continue to feature an in-depth survey of the history and culture of Mexican cuisine and its classic ingredients.

The new season brings a complete set of fresh menus, including items like Pescado a la Talla, avocado gazpacho, pork ribs in Adobo sauce and Salsa Borracha. The kitchen classroom features personal and group work stations and observation mirrors for demonstration, allowing students to choose their level of interactivity.

The school’s new home at Casa Caribe Seaside Retreat, a newly-opened bed-and-breakfast located on the main avenue, brings students closer to the ocean and town square and offers on-site accommodation, which includes breakfast service designed by Espinosa.

The new campus also offers wireless Internet and includes an expanded selection of items used during class in The Little Mexican Kitchen Shop, where students and guests can purchase local ingredients, cookware, artisanal gifts and The Little Mexican Cooking School Cookbook (3rd edition).

Classes are offered regularly each week; contact for upcoming availability. Small groups, special events and private classes can be accommodated upon request. The Little Mexican Cooking School and Puerto Morelos are located in Riviera Maya approximately 20 miles south of the Cancun airport.

For school and booking information, visit www.thelittlemexicancookingschool.com or contact owner Catriona Brown, (998)159-8890; US (512) 410-8146; cat@puertomorelosliving.com.

Diamonds International® to be Title Sponsor for Taste of Playa 2011!
