BuyPlaya and FurnitureMEX Host Zumbathon for Charity

On Friday December 14, 2012 BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors and FurnitureMEX will host a Holiday Zumbathon to support the efforts of Christmas Dreams Playa. This fun community event will take place in the sports facility located on Av. 20 and CTM, beginning at 6:00pm and ending at 8:00pm.

"We have invited Zumba instructors from around the world to participate in this Zumba marathon which we hope will become and annual event." said Zumbathon organizer Mary Martinez "The cost to participate is just 25 mn because we want everyone to be able to join in the fun! 100% of the funds collected are going to the charity."

Since 2000, a group of kind-hearted Playa del Carmen residents has helped local non-profits connect with those who need a little extra attention during the Holiday season. In years past, this group has helped organize the collection and distribution of thousands of Christmas presents for disadvantaged and special needs children. The group also provides warm blankets and essential non-perishable food items for at risk families and vulnerable elders in the community. During the 2011 Holiday season, over $86,000 mn worth of presents, school supplies and essentials were distributed by Christmas Dreams Playa.

BuyPlaya and FurnitureMEX staff will be on hand receiving donations of toys, warm blankets and non-perishable food items to distribute to Playa del Carmen's most disadvantaged families. Prepare to be "All Shook Up" in December!

Do you love musical theatre? Do you love Elvis Presley? Then Explayarte invites YOU to enjoy their upcoming production, All Shook Up!

All Shook Up is a musical comedy built around a selection of songs made famous by Elvis Presley. The story, based on William Shakespeare's 1602 play Twelfth Night, is set in 1955, in "any-town" middle America, where a young girl's dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help the small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. Among the 24 songs featured in the score are the beloved classics "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," "Don't Be Cruel," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and of course "All Shook Up".

This exciting production, directed by Shane Southcott, will feature nearly 70 young local dancers, singers and musicians. If you have had the good fortune to see Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, Cats or Seussical, you know what kind of powerhouse production to expect from Explayarte and their amazingly talented team of directors, musicians, choreographers, designers and performers. The score will be performed LIVE by Explayarte's orchestra. The script has been translated into Spanish for this production, the first showing of All Shook Up to be performed in Mexico. A Photo Report from the New Liverpool Playa del Carmen

So, Mexico's famous department store Liverpool opened a shiny new location in Playa del Carmen and while I am not much of a shopper, I still had to check it out! We have been to Liverpool in Cancun many times to make some purchases of good quality housewares unavailable in Playa del Carmen. While the prices are unarguably very high, when you really need something, it was nice to know you could most likely find it at Liverpool, even if it meant paying a premium to get it. Now that we have our own Liverpool, I fear my wallet is going to suffer. :)

This week is Cat's birthday so, of course, I was off to Liverpool to see what I could find. For the most part, we buy all of our clothes in the US on our yearly pilgrimage to the northeast, but every once in awhile, I find myself in need of a special outfit or dress for Cat. Thus far, my shopping efforts in Playa have been less than satisfactory so it is a nice change to have some good quality clothing lines to choose from. Here are a few photos to give you an idea of what you can expect to find!

Upon entry, you find the candy and confections area. By far this is the best part of the whole store. I have never seen such a fabulous selection anywhere in Playa or Cancun.

Moving to the right of the confectionery department is the book section. It is small with a limited selection of magazines and books, Spanish only. A few well known authors and translations but I had never seen or heard of most of the titles.

Also on the ground floor is the watch section. They had a fairly good selection of overpriced name brand time pieces.

A small but serviceable jewelry section where I bought several small, very affordable sets of earrings for Cat.

The women's clothing and accessories are all located on the ground floor. I didn't take much time to look through it all but at least I know where I can find formalware and a gown that does not look like it was made for a quincenera.

The make up and fragrances section was bright and shiny and well stocked with all the excellent brand names you would expect to find...Clinique, Chanel etc.

The store has a very nice selection of up market men's clothes including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and one of my favorites Sciappino. They also showed a nice section of suits, sport coats, dress shirts and ties. Now if only we can get Playa men to wear them.

Upstairs...or rather up escalator...we find the children's departments, electronics, luggage and probably the reason most people shop at Liverpool, housewares.

I found some things I really like.

And some things I could live without.

There is a nice selection of linens and towels but don't look for Target prices.

The children's clothes department was very nice and, as expected, overpriced. That being said, if I need a nice, high quality outfit for my kids for a special occasion, I will be very happy to have this option at my fingertips. Cat has a special event coming up next week and I was able to find her a lovely dress from Ralph Lauren for a price that did not offend me.

Do I want to pay these prices for everyday play clothes? No.

Am I happy to know I can dress my children appropriately if I need to. Sure thing!

The baby department was small and limited and I didn't see much more than have already seen in Playa's existing retail market.

The toy department was disappointing and again, I felt like I was seeing the same products that we can find in Meg, Soriana and Chedraui.

Meh.

There is a musical instruments area with guitars, electric and acoustic, some drums and keyboards. I am certain that serious musicians will still want to trust their purchases to Gonzalez on Constituyentes for their selection and expertise.

The optical department looks very good with an excellent selection and I will heading their the next time I need frames and lenses.

Luggage. Pricey and limited.

Of course, the store was all decked out for Christmas and had set up a holiday area with all kinds of ornaments and decorations. Some you can easily find in Soriana. Others were more unique.

So, am I still excited about Liverpool coming to Playa del Carmen? You bet. Will I be back in there for my everyday shopping needs? Probably not but I will definitely be there to find nice hostess gifts, birthday presents and special clothing purchases. I have not tried the restaurant yet so I will have to return for that reason alone! There's a lot of open land for future development around this stand-alone Liverpool location and it would be great if this could be an anchor store for a more upscale mall will more upmarket shops. The location, close to Playacar and the tourist zone can definitely support this level of retail and would be a great compliment to this city. I've got my fingers crossed for Zara and Massimo Dutti in particular! What brands would you like to see drawn to Playa del Carmen?

Performers Announced for the 10th Annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival

RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico - The 10th annual Riviera Maya Jazz Music Festival will feature a one-of-a-kind lineup of some of today's greatest jazz performers. Nestled between the white sand beaches and verdant jungles along the Eastern Caribbean coast of Mexico's Quintana Roo, Riviera Maya will vibrate to the rhythm of Jazz for 3 days on November 22nd 2012 through November 24th.

The festival, hosted in Playa Mamitas and considered to be among the top 10 jazz music festivals in the world will allow music lovers to enjoy stellar performances by world-renowned artists. Over the past 10 years the festival has hosted big names such as George Duke, Four Play, Sergio Mendes, Herbie Hancock, Ivan Lins, Armando Manzanero, Sacbe, Stanley Clarke and Yellowjackets.

"The tenth annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival will showcase jazz at its finest," said Dario Flota Ocampo, general director of the Riviera Maya Destination Marketing Office. Thursday, November 22nd

Joe d'Etienne and his Big Band: The trumpet player, composer, arranger and pianist will kick off the festival.

Pete Escovedo: The legendary percussionist will marvel festival-goers with a mix of Latin rhythms and jazz.

Victor Wooten: The day will end with a performance by the 5-time Grammy award winning musician and talented bass player.

Friday, November 23rd

Nortec: This band will get the crowds dancing with its mix of traditional Mexican, electronica and dance music.

Poncho Sanchez: One of the most influential conga players and percussionists in Afro-Cuban jazz.

Saturday, November 24th

Aguamala: This group born in Playa del Carmen will charm the crowds with a fine mix of influences, made of a base of jazz with touches of funk and rock, giving it a particular, delightful sound.

Wayne Shorter: The 6-time Grammy award winner and one of the most significant and prolific saxophonists and composers in jazz and modern music.

John Scofield: Tee masterful jazz improviser whose music falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B will close the festival.

CEA Needs Volunteers!

We have an update from our friends at CEA, Centro Ecologico Akumal, regarding their ongoing sea turtle program in Akumal. CEA is one of our favorite local non-profit environmental groups and one we have been pleased to feature for our annual "12 Day/12 Ways" Holiday Giving series.

Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) has had government authorization to run a program for protection, conservation, research and management of sea turtles on four local beaches since 1993. (SEMARNAT. S.G.P.A./ D.G.V.S. 02652 07). During turtle season, CEA staff and volunteers patrol the beaches nightly to identify and protect nesting females, nests, and hatchlings.

There are seven species of sea turtle in the world, all of which are either threatened or endangered. México is home to six of these species, four of which can be seen off the coast of Quintana Roo. Three species can regularly be found around Akumal. Local beaches are nesting ground for two of these species: the Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta Caretta) and the Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas). Year-round you can find juvenile green turtles feeding in our bays and sometimes you can see the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricate) around the reef.

MAIN OBJECTIVE
Raising awareness among tourist and residents on sea turtle biology and conservation issues is the most important thing on this job. Every night volunteers have to participate in our Turtle Talks to give information to the people who visit us.

PROJECTS
During the nesting season CEA turtle staff and volunteers, patrols the beaches of Akumal in search of nesting female turtles, turtle nests, and recent hatchlings. Their duties include protecting and tagging females, collecting scientific data, relocating eggs (in extremely cases) to more favorable locations on the beach, and releasing hatchlings to the sea. The data that the turtle team collects are then used to determine turtle hatching success, behavior, distribution, and abundance. Since 2006, CEA stop using barnyards. The decision was taken to teach tourist and visitors to respect sea turtle nesting beaches, as well as to be aware of the nests and care of them.

Since 2006, Centro Ecológico Akumal started monitoring juvenile turtles at Akumal Bay every two months. This work it's done during day, twice a week (some weeks more). The work consist in capture the turtles (snorkeling) and put them marks, measure, weight, take them samples of blood to look for sickness and do genetics studies. This work provides us data on how tourism and pollution are having impact on turtles' illnesses. This project is coordinate by Dr. Fernando Muñoz from IPN, the biologist Roberto Herrera from ECOSUR and the MVZ Ana Negrete from Parque XCARET.

Although hawksbills (Eretmochelis imbricata) inhabit the reefs just offshore, and juvenile greens feed on the seagrass beds in the bay, these animals have not historically been included in the program's scope of activities since 2006. However, CEA is seeking to strengthen and expand its Sea Turtle Protection, Conservation and Research Program by guaranteeing the position of Program Coordinator year-round, adopting international standards (Research and Management Techniques for the Conservation of Sea Turtles by IUCN/SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group), implementing internal measures to guarantee continuity in methods and techniques, and expanding its scope of operations to include turtles in the bays and on the reefs, and not just those on shore.

AKUMAL TURTLES

LOGGERHEAD TURTLES - Adults weigh 100-200 kg and grow to 1.15 m in length. Nesting season is between April and July. Females nest 3-7 times every season with approximately 120 round, white eggs in each nest. The eggs hatch in about 60 days. They feed primarily on shellfish such as crabs and snails.

GREEN TURTLES - Adults weigh 100-250 kg and grow to 1.2 m in length. Nesting season is between June and September. Each female, nest 3-7 times a year. Each nest contains 120-150 eggs, which are round and white, and hatch in about 60 days. They feed primarily on sea grasses.

VOLUNTEER
The patrol work is hard. Digging and moving nest is particularly strenuous, and the work day begins at sunset, because that's when the turtles nest and hatch. The turtles don't run on a human calendar; they nest seven days a week. So, this is a job for a night person who can work hard for several days.

Monitoring turtles on the bay is hard too. Snorkel in the bay it's not easy, we required people who are in good health, who are able to swim for long minute's periods, and do not suffer "seasick".

Protecting, monitoring and input on computer all turtles' data is the main purpose of this program, but you will also be asked to help with other aspects of life at CEA, such as giving information and presentations about our work to tourists, as the Turtle Talk (please let us know if you have the interest and the ability to give it), taking local kids to release hatchlings, or helping organize educational events (among a variety of things). So we required volunteers that speak at least two languages.

Although it would be a plus for selection, no previous background in science or marine and turtle biology is required, but you must have a strong interest in wildlife and conservation. We always ask you to look for turtle information before coming; even you would receive training here. Notice: Surprisingly volunteers can have quizzes.

Participants are expected to be enthusiastic, adventurous, be able to work as part of a team, be respectful of the host country's environment and cultures, and have a good sense of humor.

The minimum length of stay is 2 months.
Program monthly fee is 200 USD (foreigners) 100 USD (Mexicans). Your payment is due one month before the start of the program.
You must have a valid passport and visa or FM3 for the length of your stay. It is your responsibility to have up-to-date migratory documents.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have all the recommended vaccinations and take any prescribed or advised medication. Please note that CEA can not give medical advice.
You should have valid insurance for medical services.
The limit application date is at least 1 month before the dates you want start the program.

Diamonds International Taste of Playa is a community-oriented culinary event that celebrates the creativity and diverse cultural influences of chefs throughout the Riviera Maya. 2012 Feria de Playa del Carmen Sport Fishing Tournament

The second annual Feria del Carmen Sport Fishing Tournament in Playa del Carmen will take place tomorrow, Saturday July 14, leaving from the beach at 8:00 am sharp in front of Playa del Carmen's historic Parque Fundadores. First place in this exciting contest will bring a cash prize of 25 thousand pesos!

This fishing tournament is part of the sports program of the Feria del Carmen schedule of events which also includes the children's baseball championships, regional motocross championships, the "Ruta del Delfin" swim competition, the "Copa Virgin del Carmen" children's soccer tournament, the Toño Aldeco Cavelcade, the annual Cycling Classic, the "Mr. Playa" Body-building competition, roller skating, children and youth cycling, and the Martin Ubieta Horse races and Equestrian Show and more!

This year, the winners will be awarded 25 thousand pesos for 1st place, 15 thousand pesos for 2nd, 10 thousand for 3rd, 5 thousand for 4th and 5 thousand for 5th place. In addition prizes will be awarded to the anglers who bring in the 3 largest species of the day.

With this tournament, the organizers hope to resurrect one of the most important traditions of Playa del Carmen, which originated as a fishing village.The organizers hope to exceed the number of boats that participated last year, when 27 boats registered representing Cozumel, Puerto Aventuras, Puerto Morelos and Solidaridad, the host municipality.

Book Drive at Papalote School

The students in the 1er year of Preperatoria at Bachillerato Naciones Unidas/El Papalote School are conducting a community project in their Ethics and Values class. Under the supervision of their teacher, Miss Hannah, the students will be collecting and donating book to support the Public City Library. They are asking for your cooperation to collect books (in good condition). The goal is to ultimately collect 70 kg of books! If you have any books to contribute, there is a "drop slot" on the entrance gate to the school, which is located on Ave. 25 and calle 32. We appreciate your support for this cause.

Les informamos que los alumnos de 1º de Preparatoria están realizando un proyecto de ayuda a la comunidad en la clase de Ética y Valores a cargo de Miss Hannah y han decidido apoyar a la Biblioteca Municipal con la donación de libros; por este motivo pedimos de su colaboración para recolectar libros (en buen estado), la meta es juntar 70 kg de libros. Mesmerized by the Maya, Author Writes Book on 2012 Debate

A small bookstore in a rustic pueblo in Quintana Roo, Mexico, was apparently the right place for author and journalist Jeanine Kitchel to nurture her craving to learn more about the Maya culture.

Her new book, Maya 2012 Revealed, Demystifying the Prophecy, brings a realistic look at the furor caused by December 21, 2012, with emphasis on who are the Maya, the code, their calendar system, Maya astronomy and the night sky, 2012ology, the collapse of their culture, and the prophecy as seen by Maya elders.

Kitchel moved to Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, in 1997 after traveling there frequently in the 1980s. Her former bookstore, one of seven in the state of Quintana Roo and the only English language bookshop at the time, carried numerous titles about the Maya culture, the pyramid sites, breaking the Maya code, the Maya calendar, the explorers who dug the sites, the scholars who studied them, and the myths of the Chilam Balam and the Popul Vuh.

Becoming more mesmerized by the Maya with each passing year, she began writing about them on urgings from publishers Ron Mader, planeta.com, and David Simmonds, of The Mexico Files (now website MexicoPremiere.com). Her writing range expanded to The Miami Herald and three Mexico City newspapers.

"It was something I loved to read about," she said. "I was fascinated by the Maya culture and the fact that, at the time, no one could break the code. It was this incredible mystery and a very exciting time in the Yucatan and I was at the source. As each new Maya title was published-about the civilization, the code, the pyramids-I ordered it. I read everything I could get my hands on. I was seriously addicted."

Flash forward to 2012 and the end date debate. Who better to author a book describing in detail the end time prophecy and the nuances of the Maya culture than Kitchel?

The book will be available in May. On each book sold, a portion of the profits will go to edúcaTE, an educational non-profit organization in Yucatan, that helps send Maya children to school whose parents cannot afford it. Tampa - Progresso Ferry Service Considered (Questionnaire)

Greetings "Life's a Beach" readers!

What follows is a message from Tamara Magnusson (tamarainprogreso[at]gmail.com) who is once again seeking information from the US and Canadian ex-pats and snowbirds in Mexico and Central America. Plans to initiate a ferry service from Tampa to Progresso are back on the table at United Caribbean Lines and they are looking for our input to help them move forward with this ambitious investment.

To help United Caribbean Lines make an informed plan to bring this ferry service to the Yucatan, please copy and paste the questionnaire below into an e-mail and send to BNIERENBERG@AOL.COM. Don't forget to share this blog post with your expat friends so that they too can weigh in on this exciting development.

"The past year has not brought a lot of forward momentum with the ferry project in spite of the interest of three different ferry companies and many false start dates. The scandals which precipitated personnel changes at the Progresso Port Authority certainly didn't help the situation either, however, things have been happening behind the scenes and from what I understand a number of feasibility studies have been done in the Tampa area showing the ferry project is viable but the inability to do a feasibility study within the expatriate community continues to be a stumbling block especially with investors.

Having learned from the mistakes of the previous ferry services in the area and responses from the previous expat surveys, the original plans have been modified. Super high speed ferries are now being considered to shorten the crossing time, frequent user plans, and even free vehicle bonuses are being considered. A year round weekly crossing schedule with frequency based on use patterns and peak seasons will be offered. As this service will take some years to become profitable investor backing will be the key to success.

I know many of you have already completed one or both of the previous surveys, but United Caribbean Lines is asking for our input once again. The results will directly influence investors and the more responses the better so please forward this email and ask everyone you know who may travel this direction to answer the questions and forward their responses to United Caribbean Lines. If you have access to expatriate websites, blogs or travel groups please have all your members respond and forward the questions on to any other websites and blogs you use anywhere in Central America. Even if you have no interest in using the ferry service please respond because part of the purpose is to try to establish how many expats live in the Yucatan and Central America.

If you are comfortable letting UCL know how to reach you they would like to extend some special courtesies, goodies, discounts and upgrades for helping them, when the ferry service begins. Just put your email address and mailing address in Central America on your answers to the questionnaire so UCL can reach you with the offers when they get started. "

Donations Needed for Tierra de Animales Animal Rescue

Many visitors to the Riviera Maya contact us to ask what they might bring down from the United States or Canada to help the efforts of local animal rescue groups. Tierra de Animales, an organization we featured in our 2011 12 Days/12 Ways campaign, has published a wishlist of needed items that can be purchased up north at a fraction of the cost charged in Mexico.

Cash donations for medical supplies to be purchased by Tierra de Animales volunteers in the US and Canada are also appreciated. Most items are much less expensive in the US and easy for volunteers to bring down. Ongoing monetary donations are also needed for food and the purchase of airline approved dog kennels/carriers to transport adopted dogs to their new homes and families!! Thank you!

It's Turtle Nesting Season on the Riviera Maya!

It's turtle nesting season again on the Riviera Maya! Every year, adult female Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtles make their way to the beaches of the Riviera Maya, build nests and lay up to 150 soft-shelled eggs twice each season. When the baby turtles hatch (approx. 60 days later), they instinctively head for the water, using the light of the moon for navigation. They smell and taste the sand as they find their way to the ocean and remarkably will return to the very beach where they were born when it comes time for them to nest.

Our good friends at Cabanas Tulum and Ziggy Beach would like to remind everyone to take care during this special time and have shared with us a list of helpful recommendations to consider during this special time!

1. Do not use lights on the beach, shut off balcony lights, and cover all outside lights and windows if you are in a house/condo.

2. If you see a turtle coming ashore to lay their eggs, notify your hotel staff or turtle patrol if you happen to see them on the beach.

3. Do not approach the turtles (unless specifically at the invitation of turtle patrol), do not touch the turtles, definitely do not interfere with any part of the nesting process.

4. Do not take flash photography, this will definitely spook the mom.

5. Do not have beach parties during the nesting season.

6. Keep the beach free of litter or any obstacles that may get in the path of the turtle (bring in beach chairs at night, etc).

7. Keep pets indoors at night, barking dogs are not turtle-friendly.

8. Do not disturb the nests, if you see what you think is a nest that has not been marked, notify the hotel or the authorities.

If everyone works together and respects these rules, we can ensure a long and happy life for this endangered species and their continued visits to the Riviera Maya for years to come.

The best way to see the turtle nests and possibly baby turtles being released is to go on a night walk organized by CEA. Centro Ecologico Akumal is a non-profit environmental organization located in Akumal. They take out a maximum of 10 people each night at 9 pm. CEA is the only organization with permission to access certain beaches during the nesting season. The suggested donation is $15 for adults and $8 for children. Reservations are not accepted, so show up early if you can. There are also regular presentations on the CEA Turtle Watch Program, with slides of the sea turtles and a lecture about their evolution, ecology, behavior, the threats to their survival and how we can help them.

KKIS (Keep Kids in School): Looking for School Supplies

Just a very quick update from our friends at KKiS - Keep Kids in School. School supplies are needed for the young students assisted by KKiS. If you are coming to Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya and have a bit of extra room in a suitcase, please consider bringing some of these items down with you. Books and school materials are MUCH more expensive here than in the US or Canada and the families with children at the Pelopides School can use all the help they can get!

Unlike in the US and Canada, the schools in Playa del Carmen are very particular about what they want students to use for supplies. They are often very different than what students in the US/CA use. Items such as #2 pencils, glue sticks, scissors and colored pencils are all good. Please, no crayons or notebooks.

Backpacks are also needed for children in Grades 1 - 4. The kids here go nuts for themed backpacks...Barbi, Matchbox, Cars etc...anything gender specific is a big hit!

Also needed are English language books for beginning readers. Any bookstore, Walmart, Target, etc. will have them. The publication names will be: Step Into Reading, Leveled Readers, etc. and will be organized by difficulty of vocabulary and syntax. The easier levels are what are most needed.

And thanks so much to all of you who donate things. It makes things so much easier when the KKiS volunteers have the most needed supplies on hand and it puts such thankful smiles on the faces of students!
