This Holiday season was a bit challenging as it was our first sin carne. No roasted turkey on Thanksgiving. No glazed ham at Christmas. No tasty bits of prosciutto wrapped around melon, no pigs in a blanket! Somehow we muddled through and even tried a few new appetizers. One of the keepers, Cheesy Stuffed Jalapeños, was a big hit and proved to be an excellent vehicle for the soy chorizo we like. The most important thing to remember when preparing these is to wear rubber gloves or protect your hands in some way. The tiniest bit of oil from the peppers can easily make it’s way from your fingers into your eyes, nose or other "sensitive" areas. Trust me, I know! Read More...
You read all the hype about the Mayan calendar, the end of days, the impending apocalypse... right? Well, so did we and watched with much amusement as everyone outside of the Mayan world made their preparations. Some prepared for the end, fearing the worst, stocking their war chests and food pantries. Others traveled to sacred spots to celebrate the end of an era, unsure about what might come. Down here in the heart of the Mundo Maya, those who weren't somehow profiting from this whole phenomenon passed the day quietly, business as usual. Read More...

Mexico's famous department store Liverpool opened a shiny new location in Playa del Carmen and while I am not much of a shopper, I still had to check it out! We have been to Liverpool in Cancun many times to make some purchases of good quality housewares unavailable in Playa del Carmen. While the prices are unarguably very high, when you really need something it was nice to know you could most likely find it at Liverpool, even if it meant paying a premium to get it. Now that we have our own Liverpool, I fear my wallet is going to suffer. Read More...
